IDC: Philippine tablet market almost doubled in 2021Q2, Samsung dominates

Based on International Data Corporation's (IDC) Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker report, the Philippine tablet market grew in 2021.

In particular, the market almost doubled in 2021Q2 versus last year by growing 97.9 percent YoY and 15.7 percent QoQ in 2021Q2.

The research firm noted that the growth is due to the boost in demand for tablets used in distance learning as they are a cheaper alternative to laptops and desktops that can run educational platforms, apps, and productivity tools.

The top 5 brands in terms of market share in the Philippines are Samsung, Lenovo, Cherry Mobile, Huawei, and Haier.

Versus 2Q20 with 18 percent of the pie, South Korean firm Samsung captured 45.4 percent of the market share in 2Q21 which is equivalent to annual growth of 387.1 percent.

Lenovo surged to the number 2 spot by capturing 16.4 percent of the pie and growing 184 percent annually. Cherry Mobile is at number 3 with 9.1 percent. Former leader Huawei is statistically tied with Haier with 6.5 percent this 2Q21.

Haier came out of nowhere despite not having visible marketing efforts versus the other brands in the top 5.

Tablet shipments continued to be driven by the education sector due to large tenders from several Local Government Units (LGUs) to provide tablets for public school students in preparation for the school year. Face-to-face schooling remained suspended, compelling some schools to shift to online learning, said Angela Jenny Medez, Client Devices Market Analyst at IDC Philippines
