Ookla: PH Mobile and Fixed Broadband internet global rank jumps to 72nd spot (September 2021)

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2021 showed that the Philippines continues to improve its global speed rankings as it rose up again.

The Philippines is now ranked 72nd globally for mobile with an average download speed of 35.03 Mbps. It rose 1 more rank from the month before. This has been a consistent upwards trend in terms of improvements in average mobile download speeds.

For Fixed Broadband, the country did drop 1 spot to 64th but it still showed improvements in terms of average download speed. In June 2021, we got the 72nd spot with an average download speed of 66.55 Mbps and upload speed of 66.86 Mbps. Now, at 64th spot, we have an increased average download speed of 71.85 Mbps and 70.32 Mbps upload speed.

Again, to put this into perspective, we ranked 110/139 and 103/176 for Mobile and Fixed Broadband, respectively back in November 2020.

The improvements and rank increases can be attributed to the country's overall efforts in terms of network upgrades and infrastructure development. In turn, this helped internet users across the country enjoy better connectivity in the past months.

The PH government made efforts in helping telcos add new cell sites across the country easier. It also implemented the Ease of Doing Business Ace of 2018 to make tower deployments faster and simpler by ordering that processing time for necessary permits, licenses, clearances, certificates, and other requirements for common towers to be cut from 200 days to around 16 days.

PLDT, Globe, DITO, Converge, and SKY pushed themselves to offer better network infrastructures and speed boosts as well.
