How Ookla determines the fastest speeds

As the global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights, Ookla’s Speedtest is the definitive way to test the speed and performance of your internet connection. Every day, over 18 million unique tests are actively initiated by its users.

In the Philippines, Ookla looked at test results from all four top ISPs: PLDT, Converge, Globe, and Sky. Over 48 million tests were performed during the period of Q1-Q2 2022 and based on these consumer-initiated test results, PLDT scored the highest Speed Score of 77.91 followed by Converge with the Speed Score of 68.91, Globe’s Speed Score at 43.39, and Sky’s Speed ScoreTM at 39.

According to Ookla, the firm determines the fastest carrier using Speed Score that uses a modified trimean to demonstrate the download and upload speeds that are available across an ISP's network.

Ookla then take speeds from the 10th percentile, 50th percentile, and 90th percentile to combine them into a weighted average using a 1:8:1 ratio. The firm then focuses on the download speeds and median speeds since those represent what most ISPs' customers get on a day-to-day basis.

PLDT Home's innovation delivers faster speeds in PH!

By consistently providing its more than 3.1 million fiber subscribers with the strongest and fastest fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network, PLDT Home aims to stay ahead of the rapidly evolving digital transition.

Through the US-Transpacific Jupiter cable system architecture, which is planned to provide greater capacity in multiple Terabits per second, PLDT increased the capacity of its global network in July.

The only telco company in the Philippines that can offer fiber-optic service at speeds of up to 10,000 Mbps is also PLDT. This places the nation on par with first-world countries like South Korea, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Italy, New Zealand, and the USA that have access to such extremely fast home internet connections.

All of these developments are made possible by PLDT's largest network, which now spans over 803,000 kilometers of fiber infrastructure, reaches 15.5 million residences, and has a total fiber capacity of 6.25 million ports.

Quick thoughts

In our experience, this appears to be correct as PLDT provided us with great speeds with very high upload rates.

This is great for our work as content creators where we usually surf, upload, and download all day with plenty of devices connected all at the same time.

Originally, our PHP 2,099 per month plan had 100 Mbps speed. But, they currently have a promo offering up to 200 Mbps speeds. But as you can see, we are getting over 300 Mbps for downloads and 600 Mbps for uploads. That's wild.

What do you guys think?
