Sharp has introduced the new AQUOS R8 and R8 Pro flagship smartphones equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and the 240Hz IGZO OLED display in Japan.
Both smartphones carry the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 octa-core processor, LPDDR5X RAM, 256GB UFS 4.0 storage, and microSD card expansion.
The vanilla R8 comes with a 6.39-inch FHD+ Pro IGZO OLED screen with a 2340 x 1080 resolution, a 1-240Hz adaptive refresh rate, a 1,300 nits peak brightness, and Dolby Vision support. At the back of the phone is the 50.3MP f/1.9 1/1.55-inch sensor with EIS and Leica lens, and a 13MP f/2.3 118-degree ultra-wide camera with an LED flash. In front is an 8MP f/2.0 selfie shooter.
It will come with a respectable 8GB LPDDR5X RAM.
Other features of the R8 include an In-Display fingerprint scanner, a 3.5mm audio jack, stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, 5G, dual 4G VoLTE, WiFi, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, IPX5/IPX8/IP6X water and dust resistance, and a MIL-STD-810G rating.
Powering the R8 is a 4,570mAh battery with fast charging via USB-C.
Up next is the R8 Pro with the larger 6.6-inch WUXGA+ Pro IGZO OLED screen with a 2730 x 1260 resolution, a 1-240Hz adaptive refresh rate, 2,000 nits peak brightness, and Dolby Vision support. At the back of the phone is 47.2MP f/1.9 1-inch sensor, Leica Sumicron Lens, EIS, and a low light 1.9MP ToF AF 14ch spectrum sensor with an LED flash. While in front is the 12.6MP f/2.3 selfie camera.
It will come with a massive 12GB LPPDR5X RAM.
Under the display is the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max In-Display ultra-sonic fingerprint scanner. Other features include a 3.5mm audio jack, Stereo speakers, 5G, dual 4G VoLTE, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, IPX5/IPX8/IP6X water and dust resistance rating.
Powering the Pro variant is the 5,000mAh battery with fast charging via USB-C.
Running the show for both phones is Android 13 with up to 3 OS updates and 5 years of security updates.
Both phones will be available in Japan thru local carriers NTT Docomo and Softbank this July 2023. Pricing is expected to be released as the launch date approaches.
There is no word on international or Philippine availability and pricing.
