Meet the new Microsoft Office default font

Aptos replaces Calibri as the default font of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and more. It is previously known as Bierstadtand was picked after years of feedback.

Aptos is a new sans-serif typeface inspired by mid-20th-century Swiss typography.

A versatile typeface that expresses simplicity and rationality in a highly readable form, Bierstadt is also notably clear-cut with stroke endings that emphasize order and restraint.

Microsoft shared that it will roll out to be the default for all its customers over the next few months.

The Aptos font was created by Steve Matteson. The type designer is also the one who created Segoe UI, the default Windows font that is still being used in Windows 11 today.

Calibri has been the default Microsoft Office font since Office 2007. The other previous default fonts are Times New Roman and Arial.

Apart from Aptos, Microsoft is also introducing four other new custom fontsGrandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite.

Microsoft is also keeping the Bierstadt font name for those who are already familiar with it.

According to Microsoft, the new font will be available for download soon.
