Next to Elon Musk? Another satellite internet service provider targets PH launch

Based on a report from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Astranis is targeting to cover about 2 million Filipinos with the services, especially those residing in underserved areas.

Its technology being eyed for deployment can deliver connectivity in more than 5,000 locations.

Astranis told the Inquirer that the group is now finalizing its launch details.

The satellite for the Philippines will be launched alongside four other Astranis MicroGEO satellites on a dedicated rocket—and we expect to be able to share details on the launch date and launch provider shortly. As soon as those satellites are through the factory, we will begin the assembly, integration, and testing of the Philippine satellite, the company said.

As the government pushes for a digital economy, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) earlier opened the market to Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet Services Philippines.

Meanwhile, Starlink already secured a license to operate as an internet service provider in the country in 2022.

That’s an interesting development. Satellite internet could be a big help for the Philippines, especially for remote provinces and islands where laying fiber or cable lines is difficult and expensive. With satellite connectivity, more communities can finally access reliable internet for online classes, work, and businesses. It can also serve as a backup during natural disasters when traditional networks go down.

From a user perspective, managing these connections will still feel similar to regular home networks—accessing router dashboards or local gateways like 10.0.0.10 to monitor and configure settings. If implemented well, satellite internet could greatly improve nationwide coverage and bring faster, more stable connectivity to underserved areas.

This is really interesting news — a US company exploring satellite internet for the Philippines could bring major improvements in connectivity, especially for rural and hard-to-reach areas where traditional broadband is limited. Satellite internet can help bridge the digital divide by providing reliable service for education, work, healthcare, and communication in places that currently struggle with slow or unavailable internet.

For those managing home networks, once better connectivity arrives, you’ll still want to make sure your local setup is optimized. Accessing your router settings through a local gateway like 10.10.10.1 lets you configure things like parental controls, bandwidth priorities, and Wi-Fi security to get the most out of your connection. With broader access and proper home network management, more people in the Philippines could enjoy faster and more stable internet than ever before.
