Intramuros has long been perceived as unfriendly to local photographers, particularly those carrying larger gear such as DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and other professional setups.

No more permit needed

That is set to change as the historic "Walled City" now allows visitors to use professional cameras for personal and souvenir photography without securing a permit.

According to the Department of Tourism (DOT) Philippines, the new policy, introduced by the Intramuros Administration (IA) and CameraHaus, seeks to make heritage photography more accessible and encourage photographers to capture and share the centuries-old charm of Intramuros.

Visitors must still follow site-specific guidelines, including restrictions on flash photography in certain areas to help preserve historic structures and museum collections.

To further promote photography in the area, CameraHaus, together with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and IA, recently organized the inaugural Street Summit, "Intramuros Reframed," which gathered more than 300 photographers, content creators, and visual artists for a community photowalk highlighting the Walled City's iconic landmarks and hidden gems.
