National Fiber Backbone starts in Ilocos Norte-Quezon City

The Marcos administration inaugurated the first phase of the project last week as the Philippines seeks advancement in the digital world.

The said phase of the massive project covers 1,245 kilometers from Laoag, Ilocos Norte to Roces in Quezon City.

Once operational, the initial phase would boast 600 Gbps optical spectrum capacity, promising to provide high-speed internet access to 14 provinces across Northern and Central Luzon.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said this was possible, thanks to partnerships between the government and the private sector.

The successful completion of Phase 1 is an enormous breakthrough as we continue our quest to increase internet connectivity and service capacity. We are assured that the NFB Phase 1 will already make a significant impact on our internet connectivity and in the day-to-day activities of ordinary Filipinos, Marcos said.

The whole project, with five more phases yet to start construction, is eyed for completion by 2026.

The NFB is envisioned to provide internet connectivity for about 70 million Filipinos.
