Apple M4 family |
A true upgrade in performance per watt?
All three chips feature what Apple claims to be the world's fastest CPU core which should deliver the industry's best single-threaded performance and yield substantially faster multithreaded performance. The GPU features faster cores and a 2x faster ray-tracing engine.
Both the M4 Pro and M4 Max enable Thunderbolt 5 for Macs while offering 75 percent increased bandwidth from the Unified Memory (from the previous generation). Alongside is the 2x faster Neural Engine from the previous generation, it features enhanced machine learning accelerators which should bring incredible pro and AI workload performance for Apple intelligence.

Apple M4 with 10-core CPU
|
The base M4 chip features up to 10-core CPU made up of 4 performance cores and up to 6 efficiency cores. Apple claims it's 1.8x faster than M1. Included are a 10-core GPU and the 16-core Neural Engine. It supports up to 32GB of unified memory with a bandwidth of up to 120GB/s and now supports up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and up to two external displays in addition to the built-in display.

Apple M4 Pro with up to 14-core CPU |
While the M4 Pro scales up what the M4 offers with up a 14-core CPU made up of 10 Performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. It supposedly offers 1.9x faster CPU performance over M1 and up to 2.1x faster performance than the latest AI PC chip. It comes with 20 GPU cores that offer 2x faster graphics performance over M4.
It supports up to 64GB of unified memory with up to 273GB/s memory bandwidth which is a massive 75 percent increase over M3 Pro. It brings Thunderbolt 5 support delivering up to 120GB/s data transfer speeds which is more than double that of Thunderbolt 4.

Apple M4 Max with 16-core CPU |
Lastly, the new M4 Max is the ultimate choice with up to 16-core CPU where 12 are performance cores and 4 are efficiency cores. It is said to be 2.2x faster than the M1 Max and 2.5x faster than the latest AI PC chip. The GPU has up to 40 cores which is 1.9x faster than M1 Max.
M4 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory with up to 546GB/s memory bandwidth. It features an enhanced media engine that includes two video encode engines and two ProRes accelerators which make it the best for video professionals. It also supports Thunderbolt 5.
Apple is claiming that the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max deliver high standards of energy efficiency and can deliver up to 24 hours of battery life.
