OPPO Find X8 Review - PHP 55K Phone of the year contender
OPPO Find X8 in Star Grey

To recap, the last OPPO Find X series smartphones we got our hands on were the China-exclusive X7 Ultra and the four-year-old Find X3 Pro. The smartphone landscape has changed significantly since the X3 Pro's arrival.

In our Unboxing, we explored the stunning design and premium build of the Find X8. In this article, we take a deeper dive.

To recap, the new Find X8 features a 6.59-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen with a 2,760 x 1,256 resolution. Inside is the 3nm MediaTek Dimensity 9400 SoC, 12GB RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 5,630mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC Wired charging via USB-C, 50W AIRVOOC wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging.

It features a Triple 50MP Hasselblad camera on the back while in front is the 32MP selfie camera.

In the Philippines, it is priced at only PHP 54,999 for the 12GB/256GB variant.

Let's dive into the review!

Multimedia Experience

OPPO Find X8's display

In front is a 6.59-inch flat AMOLED screen with rounded corners and a 2,760 x 1,256 resolution. It has a 120Hz refresh rate, a 3,840Hz PWM Dimming, and DC Dimming. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG. It is TUV Rheinland Eye Comfort 4.0 certified.

The panel is bright at 800 nits typical and has a peak brightness of 4,500 nits in HDR. This means it's readable under direct sunlight. The colours pop while the text and fine details are crisp.

Popping colors, crisp details

It supports 10 multi-touch points, making it good for multitasking or games that support multiple simultaneous touch inputs. It responds quickly and accurately to our taps and gestures.

The bezels around the panel area are symmetrical and are the thinnest bezel yet on an OPPO phone at 1.45mm. On the top bezel is the super slim earpiece while below it is the punch hole that houses the selfie camera. The phone also comes with a Dynamic Island-like feature that pops out around the punch hole when specific actions by certain apps are used.

For audio, the phone is equipped with stereo speakers (top and bottom firing). Around the phone are four microphones used for noise canceling in calls and for audio recording.

The sound from the speakers is always surprisingly loud, especially at 90 percent. What surprises us is that it maintains great sound quality although out the range. It can be pushed to 300 percent with minimal penalties too.

The microphones do a good job of picking up sounds from a meter away while the noise-cancellation for calls is good too.

Cameras

The back is the rear cameras made up of a 50MP f/1.8 main camera with a 1/1.56-inch Sony LYT-700 sensor and OIS, a 50MP f/2.0 ultra-wide angle camera with a 1/2.75-inch Samsung 5KJN5 sensor and a 3.5cm macro, and a 50MP f/2.6 3x Triple Prism Periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.95-inch Sony LYT-600 sensor with an LED flash.

The included modes of the stock camera app include Photo, Video, Master (Auto/Pro), Portrait, Night, Hi-Res, Pano, Movie, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Long Eposure, Dual-View Video, Sticker, Doc Scanner, and XPAN.

The Master has an Auto and Pro sub-modes. In both modes, users can select which camera to use and users can pre-set the saturation, contrast, sharpness, vignette, and EV (+-3). In Pro mode, users have more granular controls which include ISO (50-3200), Shutter Speed (1/8000 to 30 secs), EV, White Balance, and Autofocus.

Added features include Aspect Ratio, Timer, Action Mode, Interval Shooting, and Live Photo.

The Portrait Mode can use the 1x, 2x, and 3x camera and it comes with bokeh strength control (f/1.4-16), and Retouching (1-100).

In both the Photo, Portrait, and Video Modes, users can use preset filters including the Hasselblad Film CC Fresh, NC Emerald, and NH Clear.

OPPO's updated burst feature called Lightning Snap includes the ability to touch and hold the shutter button to take burst photos of up to 7 frames per second and select between the classic burst style or the new clear burst. The new clear burst when turned on along with action mode improves the sharpness of fast-moving objects even when the initial shot is blurry.

OPPO also added a new Soft Lighting Portrait where when users are using the portrait mode, they can select between soft light effects such as Misty, Glowy, and Dreamy.

For low light, the images are so good that we didn't bother using the Night mode. The 1x, 3x, and 6x are stunning while the ultra-wide isn't exactly on par as the others but it is still better than majority of low light ultra-wide shots we've seen so far.

You know its good when the Night Mode is only used sparringly.

For portraits, the Find X8 can choose between 1x, 2x, and 3x while having the ability to apply filters and artificial bokeh. The black and white filter is on point while the bokeh has great edge detection but still looks somewhat unnatural.

Soft lighting is nice addition for those who want a misty, dreamy or glowy effect on their images.

XPan utilizes the unique 65 x 24 aspect ratio with the ability to switch between the ultra-wide, 1x and 3x lens. The resulting image is as good as the ones above but with a unique aspect ratio.

Burst shooting on the Find X8 saves all shots in one file. Once viewing the file on the Photo app, there is a burst icon on the top right. Once tapped, it will show the user all the shots. The user can then choose which shots to export. The above image is the shot the camera app picked as the best shot.

Overall, the rear camera produced some of the most consistently great images we've seen on a smartphone so far. Our only nitpicks are that the portrait mode's bokeh doesn't look natural and that the ultra-wide camera's lowlight performance could be tweaked.

The 32MP f/2.4 selfie camera with a 1/2.74-inch Sony IMX615 sensor is on the punch hole on the display.

Daylight selfies from the OPPO Find X8 are great too. The colors, sharpness, and contrast are on point.

Like with the portrait mode bokeh of the rear cameras, the edge detection is great but the bokeh looks artificial.

Indoor selfies are the same as the daylight. It never disappoints even with the slight increase in grain or noise.
Selfie low light
Selfie low light

In low light, the selfie camera's images prioritize keeping the detail, color, and sharpness of the subject while the background looks slightly affected by the noise and noise reduction. While the hair has lost sharpness because of the wind and slower shutter speed, the image still looks so good.

Overall, the front cameras produce consistently stunning images across the board. Our only nitpick is the portrait mode bokeh has good edge detection but looks artificial. In addition to that, the ultra-wide camera's low-light performance is slightly less than the rest of the cameras.

The rear and front cameras can record up to 4K at 60fps with Dolby Vision. The footage is sharp and vibrant in color. There is some noise but is well controlled. Stabilization is impressive with little to no noticeable micro jitters. If you want to fully eliminate the micro jitters there is an Ultra Steady mode that records up to 4K at 60fps but crops the field of view.

The rear and front camera video capability of the Find X8 is outstanding.

Performance

OPPO Find X8's AnTuTu and GeekBench results
OPPO Find X8's AnTuTu and GeekBench results

Inside the OPPO Find X8 are the TSMC 3nm MediaTek Dimensity 9400 octa-core processor, Immortalis-G925 MC12 GPU, 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, and a 256GB UFS 4.0. It utilizes a combination of a high-efficiency vapor chamber, a graphite layer, and a highly conductive thermal gel within the dual-layer motherboard that OPPO claims guarantees optimal performance under demanding workloads.

Beastly performance

OPPO's Trinity Engine returns and is integrated which the brand claims offers an 8.2 percent drop in power consumption when playing games and offers a 4.5 percent drop when watching videos.

During the AnTuTu test, while being in High Performance Mode, the phone's temperature increased by 7.3 degrees while the battery lost 9 percent power. It has beaten over 96 percent of other devices that run the same version of AnTuTu.
3DMark Wild Life Extreme result
3DMark Wild Life Extreme result

In the more intensive 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme, the Find X8 managed to score 5,173 overall with an average frame rate of 30.98. During the test, it lost 1 percent of the battery and maintained a temperature of 39 degrees. It has beaten over 97 percent of other phones that ran Wild Life Extreme.

In GeekBench AI, it scored 1,744 single precision, 1669 half-precision, and 2034 in the quantized score. While the internal storage got 1.79GB/s in sequential read speeds and 831.24 in sequential read speeds.

OPPO Find X8 benchmarks:

  1. AnTuTu - 2,548,011
  2. Geekbench 6 - 2,654 (single-core), 7,496 (multi-core)
  3. 3DMark Wild Life Extreme - 5,173 overall score, 30.98 average FPS
  4. GeekBench AI - 1,744 single precision, 1,669 half-precision, 2,034 quantized score
  5. CPDT - 1.79 GB/s sequential read speeds and 831.24 MB/s sequential write speeds

The OPPO Find X8 scores in AnTuTu and the Geekbench are groundbreaking. The new 3nm CPU and GPU performance offers some of the biggest improvements in raw performance and efficiency.
Genshin Impact graphics settings
Genshin Impact graphics settings

In Genshin Impact, it managed to unlock the High graphics settings as the default. This is a Massive indicator of the significantly improved GPU brought by the new 3nm architecture because, in the past several years, flagship smartphones with flagship chipsets only managed to unlock the medium graphics settings.

Playing Genshin Impact continuously for an hour on the OPPO Find X8 was a treat. Even when the screen was getting busy with multiple characters and multiple animations, the game was running smoothly. Even after an hour of continuous playing, the phone did not even warm up to warrant any concern. It only warmed up during the massive download and installation of the Genshin Impact files.

In our experience, the phone can handle the majority of tasks like navigating through the OS, opening apps, web surfing, and social media without struggling.

The phone has an ultrasonic In-Display fingerprint sensor and face unlock for security. The initial setup and subsequent uses are quick and it detects our biometrics instantaneously. It works even if your finger is a little sweaty.

The face unlocks only struggles when the camera is dirty. The screen brightens up when used in the dark.

Regarding connectivity, we have the following: WiFi 7, 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, OTG, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, and dual nano SIM.

Connections are usually stable for WiFi and we get 4 to 5 bars of mobile data signal most of the time.
PCMark Battery Benchmark result and Battery usage report
PCMark Battery Benchmark result and Battery usage report

Inside the phone is a large 5,630mAh battery. It lasted more than 17 hours on our usual PCMark Battery benchmark. In daily use, we would end the day with 20 to 25 percent battery after 6+ hours of on-screen time even when constantly connected to 5G, WiFi, and Bluetooth devices.

When running High Performance mode all day, the phone would yield 5 hours of on-screen time.

The battery charges via USB-C with the 80W wall charger which charges the phone 100 percent in around 70 minutes.

It supports wireless charging but to get the fastest 50W wireless charging, you will need an AirVOOC wireless charger.
OPPO Find X8 with ColorOS 15
OPPO Find X8 with ColorOS 15

It is running on ColorOS 15 based on Android 15. It comes with builds on the previous generations' visuals and features by polishing them while making them more accessible for less tech-savvy people. In fact, it takes the best features, UI elements and ease-of-use from other brands and integrates them into ColorOS. So much so that when used side-by-side with an iPhone, there would be barely any struggle switching between the two.

Included with the phone is the AI LinkBoost. It supposedly improves seamless connectivity anytime, anywhere. It uses a 360-degree Surround Antenna that is said to provide robust connectivity.

Pre-installed is the AI Studio app where users can select from a gallery of preselected generated designs. They can then upload their own photos to generate photos of themselves that are based on both their photos and the preselected generated design. Currently, it costs 10 stars per press of the generate button.
New AI Editor's Remove Reflections feature
New AI Editor's Remove Reflections feature

Other AI features include the AI Editor. It is an image editing suite in the Photos app. Users can select 4K Enhance Clarity, AI Eraser, Unblur and Remove Reflections.

AI Eraser offers options to select the unwanted object in the photo with Smart Lasso, Paint Over, and Remove People. At first, the people detection and removal wasn't something to write home about. Over time and after several updates, it got better. Overall it is a nice to have feature when it works but how often do we really need it is the question only time will tell.

The same can be said with Remove reflections, It does not totally remove the reflections but it does minimize them to the point where you have to be looking for the reflections to actually see them.

Another new feature is the AI ToolBox. It is a productivity-focused companion which is an integrated tool from the Sidebar. It includes the AI Summary, AI Speak, and AI Writer. One summarizes, one reads the content aloud for you, and the other checks and corrects grammatical errors.

It also comes with Google Gemini and Circle to search. It is the same as the iterations from recently launched smartphones.
OPPO ColorOS 15's new 'Share with iPhone' feature
OPPO ColorOS 15's new 'Share with iPhone' feature

One last unique and groundbreaking feature is the Touch to Share with iPhone. ColorOS 15 introduces a feature where it can effortlessly transfer files with a single NFC tap between a Find X8 and an iPhone or iPad. The iOS user just needs to install the O+ connect app and seamless transfer can now occur between operating systems. This bridges OPPO's devices to the Apple ecosystem. We hope that OPPO will develop this even further.

Pros - Stunning and compact design, Premium build materials, IP68/69, powerful and efficient performance in gaming, beautiful photos and selfies from Hasselblad cameras, decently long battery life on Balanced battery mode, fast 80W charging, 50W wireless charging, innovative AI and cross-OS features in ColorOS 15, WiFi 7, competitive pricing
Cons - Better if there was 16GB RAM and 512GB/1TB variant, software tweaks to improve battery drain in High Performance mode, software tweaks for portrait mode bokeh, 50W wireless charging is fast but needs AirVOOC charger, better if Qi 2 compatible in the future

Verdict

OPPO Find X8 web surfing
OPPO Find X8 web surfing

We are trying so hard to find a fault in the Find X8 and all we found were nitpicks.

So, we shall start with those. Our main nitpicks are that there are no 16GB RAM + 512GB/1TB storage options and that the high-performance mode drains the battery way faster than when in balanced battery mode. The artificial bokeh in the Portrait modes. The ultra-wide camera's low light performance is good but not as great as the other camera's low light performance. It could be tweaked. Lastly, even though the 50W AirVOOC is fast, the availability of the charger is difficult. Hopefully, they add Qi 2 wireless charging compatibility in the future too.

The OPPO Find X8 is made of some of the finest materials and craftsmanship we've seen from OPPO. It is on par with significantly more expensive flagships from other brands.

Otherwise, the RAW performance of the new 3nm Dimensity 9400 and the new GPU is groundbreaking because of its efficiency and power. We were playing games with graphics settings never before seen on a smartphone this size. It even kept

Lastly, the images produced from the triple 50MP Hasselblad cameras and the selfie cameras are some of the best images we've taken on a smartphone so far. Even in low light, we almost never used the night mode because the Auto was so good.

The OPPO Find X8 is easily one of the best phones in 2024 and could easily take the phone of the year crown in the under PHP 60K flagship Android segment.

So we highly recommend the OPPO Find X8 if you are looking for one of the best phones for PHP 55K or if you are looking for a top-performing Android Phone but prefer the UI of iOS.

What do you think guys?
