More Filipino words included in Oxford

The Oxford English Dictionary has announced Filipino words that were added to its list.

Among them is "gigil" which it defined as a "an intense feeling caused by anger, eagerness, or the pleasure of seeing someone or something cute or adorable, typically physically manifested by the tight clenching of hands, gritting of the teeth, trembling of the body, or the pinching or squeezing of the person or thing causing this emotion."

According to a PhilStar report, there were also 10 other Philippine English words were added to the dictionary. These include "salakot" which it said is "a type of lightweight Filipino hat traditionally worn by farmers as protection against the weather, typically domed or conical in shape, with a wide brim and often having a spiked or ornamental finial at the tip of the crown," as well as "kababayan," which is either "a fellow Filipino" or "a small, sweet cake, similar to a muffin, typically yellow in color and having the shape of a salakot."

The dictionary also included "sando," which is "a sleeveless garment worn under or instead of a shirt; a vest," and "videoke," the Filipino version of karaoke.

The well-loved dish "lumpia" also made it to the list.

Philippine English that uses existing English words was also added. These include "load," or the "credit purchased for a pay-as-you-go mobile phone," "CR," short for comfort room and an alternative to toilet, and "terror", which is a "strict, harsh or demanding" teacher.

"Thomasite," a historical term referring to an American teacher in the Philippines during the period of American occupation, was another new entry.
