Over 6,000 election-related violations reported

The automated counting machine error was named as the top complaint raised during the recently concluded midterm election.

Citing Vote Report PH, Inquirer.net reported that 6,064 election-related violations were reported during the polls. Of the 1,593 verified cases, 50.09 percent, or 798 reports, were related to machine errors.

ACM errors include cases of paper jams, mismatch of actual votes versus Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) results, and overvoting due to smudging and/or other markings on the ballots. These technical issues inevitably led to voter disenfranchisement, Dr. Danilo Arao, convenor of poll watchdog Kontra Daya, was quoted in the report.

Vote Report PH also recorded illegal campaigning (12.55 percent or 200 incidents), voter disenfranchisement (9.04 percent or 144 cases), non-compliance by the Board of Election Inspectors (7 percent or 102 incidents), and red-tagging of progressive candidates (3.39 percent or 54 cases).

The Commission on Elections has attributed some issues to extreme heat and humidity.

While these factors might play a role, the fact remains that these errors and technical issues will continue because the Comelec fails to be transparent with how they’re testing the election paraphernalia, Arao said.

The latest data shows that Senator Bong Go remains the leader in the Senate race in this year's polls, with over 26 million votes. He is followed by returning Senator Bam Aquino with over 20.6 million votes.

Completing the top five senators are Bato Dela Rosa, Erwin Tulfo, and Kiko Pangilinan.

Meanwhile, Akbayan continues to lead the vote count among party-lists with over 2.7 million votes.
