PlayStation to shift to a pure digital era on 2028

Sony announced this week that it will stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, pivoting the console maker toward an all-digital future.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sony said the move reflects how far consumer demand has already tilted toward digital downloads. Starting in 2028, new titles will be sold exclusively through the PlayStation Store and at retail in digital form. Games already released on disc, or launching on disc before the cutoff, won't be affected.

Sony framed the shift as a natural evolution rather than a sudden break, saying it wants to align with how most players already access games, while still giving customers a choice of where to buy new titles. How retailers will sell "physical" copies after 2028—likely boxed download codes rather than actual discs—hasn't been detailed.

The news comes weeks after Grand Theft Auto 6 drew backlash when its physical edition turned out to include only a download code instead of a disc, seen by some as an early sign of this shift. Sony also announced that PS3 and PS Vita storefronts will close globally by 2027, though previously purchased content will remain downloadable.

The change arrives as console prices climb industry-wide, with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all raising hardware prices this year. It mirrors a transition away from physical media already well underway in film, TV, and music.
