The expected price

First launched in Malaysia, the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max retails for EUR 1,150 (around PHP 81.8K) for the 12GB/256GB variant and PHP EUR 1,300 (around PHP 91.7K) for the 12GB/512GB edition.

Historically, official PH pricing of HUAWEI devices has been on par with or even lower than global tags.

If the brand can position this model in the PHP 80K–90K range, media practitioners, mobile photographers, and creators will gain access to one of the best camera phones in the market without needing to spend six digits in cash.

This comes at a time when smartphone prices have surged due to the global memory crisis, pushing other "Ultra and Pro Max" camera phones past the PHP 100K mark.

The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max packs the Kirin 9030S SoC with a new NPU that is reportedly built under a 5nm equivalent manufacturing process. Our unit is paired with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.

On benchmarks, this is underwhelming versus the current high-end chips from Apple, Qualcomm, and even MediaTek. 

Thankfully, the experience for those who will not play very demanding games in person is GREAT. The phone is FAST, navigation is swift, moving from one app to another is effortless, nd shooting operation is near flawless.

Better than expected speed and overall performance

Even compared to other flagships said to be faster, the Pura 90s Pro Max keeps up and sometimes feels quicker. Shooting is fast, and long‑range shots process about two seconds faster than my own Find X9 Ultra, which costs PHP 130K. For mobile photographers, this speed is very useful since they can check the shot right away for quality and more.

The display

The display of the Pura 90s Pro Max is also a treat to the eyes. Its 6.9-inch Kunlun Glass-protected LTPO OLED screen w/ 120Hz smooth refresh rate and 2.8K resolution is superb. Colors are rich and vibrant yet accurate. It is also highly detailed at about 460 ppi and can go extra-bright when needed, up to 3,000 nits.

What makes the display stand out further is its anti‑reflective coating, cutting light reflection by 70% compared to the previous generation. This means that even during outdoor shoots, framing and checking your shots is clearer and free from the usual distracting glare.

Extra-long battery life

The Pura 90s Pro Max packs a bigger 6,000mAh battery, a clear jump from the Pura 80 Ultra's 5,170mAh capacity.

Combined with HUAWEI's expertise and reputation in battery optimization, I was able to use the phone as my primary camera during the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Series launch date in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, without needing a power bank. 

In particular, I used the phone that day from 8 AM to 6 PM before reaching the 50% mark. It took several event photos and videos that were useful in the articles and short videos we published. 

Sounds impressive, right? Guess what, I'm on WiFi hotspot mode with 5G all the time during that day.

As my primary smartphone, it can truly last for a whole workday of heavy use on a single charge. As a secondary camera phone, it can legitimately last for 2 days on a single charge.

My review unit didn't come with the 100W brick, but when plugged into my 80W GaN charger, it can charge the device from 0 to 100% in under an hour.

AND YES, you read that right. This phone has 5G even for global users—an upgrade over the 4G-only Pura 80 Ultra last year. This is also the first time that HUAWEI has had a flagship 5G-ready phone since the P40 Series in 2020.

For extra convenience, the Pura 90s Pro Max also now supports iPhone file transfers.

The Pura 90s Pro Max packs a 50MP f/1.4–f/4.0 LOFIC RYYB main sensor alongside a groundbreaking 200MP 1/1.28" RYYB telephoto lens with up to 4x optical zoom and telephoto macro—currently the largest in the industry.

It delivers 10x and 20x lossless zoom, stretches to 100x digital zoom, and records video with zoom up to 30x.

Supporting shooters include a 40MP f/2.2 RYYB ultra‑wide camera and a 13MP f/2.2 selfie lens.

As shown in our first shots article, the zoom is truly awesome and is some of the best, if not the best, among all the phones we tested this year.

General clarity in daylight is amazing up to 20x. The zoom generally turns ordinary-looking snaps into something amazing.

Switch to 10x zoom, and the telephoto lens transforms the shot, producing cinematic clarity, like the Buzz Lightyear test shot. Both 4x optical and 10x hybrid zoom elevate everyday subjects, turning simple food photos into mouthwatering close‑ups with creamy bokeh, even in low light.

Once very hard to achieve, the phone has the ability to deliver macro‑like close‑ups with stunning detail in ideal well-lit conditions.

Zooming up to 20x remains impressively stable and near‑lossless—far less shaky than typical super‑zoom phones. Testing at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park highlighted its autofocus and speed, capturing fast‑moving hornbills and ostriches with DSLR‑like bokeh at long ranges.

Portraits benefit too: skin tones are warm, details remain crisp at 4x and 10x, though edge detection can occasionally miss fine strands of hair. When it nails focus, results are spectacular.

This phone's zoom is outstanding for my work, letting me capture media coverage clearly even from a distance.

Stage shots at concerts and events also shine, with sharp detail and vibrant color reproduction.

The phone's AI is still not too aggressive in 50 and 100x mode—just enough to make text from afar visible.

f/4.0 and f/1.4

I also honestly enjoyed its variable aperture mode. This allowed me to manually control the aperture opening from f/4.0 to f/1.4. Blur is less at f/4.0, and it produces a deeper bokeh effect at f/1.4.

The aperture blades also helped me be more artistic and creative with some of my shots. I enjoyed shooting at f/4.0 on areas with multiple light sources in the background for that natural starburst effect.

Auto night shot 1x and ultra-wide

In the dark, users are in for a treat. What else do I need to explain? The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max produced some of the highest level of night shots taken with a modern flagship smartphone.

One of the best phones for low-light ultra-wide shots

While shooting speed will be a bit slower, the cameras of this phone generally produced exceptional low-light images with minimal noise, closer to natural textures, impressively wide dynamic range, and still punchy colors.

Personally, I am using this phone more in my work as a tech creator, particularly for taking videos. I even shot a 10-minute YouTube video for another brand using this device, and I am very pleased with what it delivered for a phone.

What I enjoyed the most when shooting 4K videos (up to 60fps) is that it can take close-up videos near effortlessly. With the help of its zoom cameras, taking macro-like video shots is even possible.

There are still some occasional jitters when panning and zooming sometimes, but nothing not normal on smartphone cameras.

Obviously, there is some noise in the dark. But this is still one of the better camera phones for taking videos in challenging conditions.

Even for selfies, it records up to 4K 60fps. While its megapixel count is not as high as its back cameras at 13MP f/2.2, the handset takes wide shots when needed and can even zoom up to 2x.

The quality ranges from decent to good depending on the lighting condition or situation. The shake is also more than acceptable even when walking.

Personally, I was able to maximize its front camera for my talking head videos for TikToks and other short videos.

AI Remove

HUAWEI has refined its AI tools, making them especially valuable for creators who want top‑quality shots straight from their phones—without the hassle of transferring files to a PC for editing.

AI De-glare

Its AI Composition 3.0 helps users frame shots more effectively, while AI De‑glare reduces unwanted reflections without compromising brightness.

Moreover, features like AI Move and AI Remove allow users to reposition or clean up elements in the frame, and AI Best Expression ensures group photos capture the most natural smiles.

Its AI Remove is now arguably on par in edge detection with the competition.

Our thoughts

For mobile photographers and creators, this phone is a powerhouse.

It delivers fast shooting, superb zoom, vibrant display, long battery life, and the return of 5G, making it a reliable workhorse.

It is not the absolute fastest chip on paper, but in real‑world use, it keeps pace with pricier flagships in build, battery, connectivity, and even photo shooting and saving speeds, while offering one of the best zoom and overall camera experiences available today.

While there’s no official PH price yet, based on international tags, it is expected to land more affordably than the competition and may not breach the PHP 100K mark.
