realme recently unleashed a smartphone that aims to revolutionize mobile photography: the realme 16 Pro+ 5G, proudly dubbed the "200MP Portrait Master."

With a massive 200MP main camera, a stunning 144Hz AMOLED display, and a 7000mAh battery packed into a lightweight 198g frame, this mid-range flagship killer promises to deliver flagship-level features at a competitive price point.

We got our hands on the device and spent considerable time testing its cameras, performance, display, and overall user experience. Here's our review of whether the realme 16 Pro+ 5G lives up to its ambitious "Portrait Master" claim.

The inclusion of a protective case right out of the box is appreciated, as it immediately shields the premium matte finish. The charger included supports the phone's 80W Ultra Charge capability, so you won't need any additional accessories for optimal charging speeds.

Build Quality/Design

One of the standout features of the realme 16 Pro+ 5G is its visual design. The back features a premium matte finish with a Master Gold colorway dubbed the "Urban Wild Design"—a philosophy created by world-renowned designer Naoto Fukasawa that blends natural textures with modern urban aesthetics. It's a refreshing departure from the typical glass or plastic backs we see on most phones.

At 198g in weight, the phone feels light and easy to handle in one hand. This is quite impressive given its 6.8-inch display size. The weight distribution is well-balanced, making extended use comfortable.

Amazing display quality!

The 6.8-inch AMOLED display is nothing short of stunning. With a 144Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate, and up to 1,800 Nits of brightness (HBM mode), this screen is incredibly responsive and vibrant. The 94% screen-to-body ratio maximizes the viewing area, and the FHD+ 1280x2800 resolution delivers crisp visuals at 453 ppi.

The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, offering reliable drop and scratch protection. For streaming enthusiasts, the phone supports Netflix Widevine L1 certification (up to 1080P) and YouTube 2160p playback, making it ideal for watching your favorite content with excellent picture quality.

Complementing the matte finish on the back is the rear camera setup. It features an elegant Metal Mirror Camera Deco which, from our experience, serves a practical purpose beyond aesthetics: it acts as a mirror guide for taking rear camera selfies. It's a small but thoughtful design touch that adds utility to the premium aesthetic.

This is where the realme 16 Pro+ 5G truly shines. The "200MP Portrait Master" nickname is earned through its impressive camera system, delivering impressive results across various shooting conditions.

One of the most powerful camera specs for the price

Both front and rear cameras deliver exceptional photos, thanks in part to realme's self-developed LumaColor IMAGE technology—a new imaging tech that intelligently balances light and color to deliver natural, expressive portraits.

The depth separation is clean, the edge detection is mostly sharp (though it may still be hit-or-miss), and the overall bokeh effect reminds us of bigger traditional cameras. 

The 200MP main camera, in our opinion, is the star of the show. The dual optical image stabilization on both the main and telephoto cameras ensures sharp shots even in challenging lighting or when using zoom.

For landscape and travel shots, the phone delivers vibrant, saturated colors that make scenic views pop. If you're a frequent traveler who loves capturing landscapes, this phone will absolutely satisfy your needs. The color science is impressive, with excellent dynamic range and detail retention.

The photo mode includes a "Smart Scenes" feature with presets for Party, Stage, Silhouette, and Fireworks. The Silhouette preset is particularly impressive, as it captures dramatic shots during sunset or against bright backgrounds, preserving detail in the shadows while maintaining proper exposure in the bright areas.

The 50MP telephoto lens with 2-axis OIS provides up to 10x zoom, and the zoom quality is genuinely impressive.

Details remain sharp, and you don't lose much in the way of clarity when zoomed in.

Selfie Camera

Living up to the Portrait Master nickname, the front camera excels at taking high-quality selfie photos both indoors and outdoors. Portrait mode is particularly impressive, delivering sharp, detailed shots with excellent subject isolation.

One thing to note: the front camera's AI enhancements can alter your portrait, making it look overly edited if you prefer a more natural appearance. 

AI enhancements aren't our cup of tea

The good news is you can disable this in the settings if it's not your preference. For users who want a polished look, the AI enhancements are genuinely effective.

The rear camera captures video at 4K 60fps, 4K 30fps, and 1080P 60fps with video stabilization, while the front camera handles 4K 60fps and 1080P 60fps.

You also get slow-motion support for the rear camera up to 720p 240fps, and time-lapse and multi-view recording capabilities for both cameras. A professional video mode is also available on the rear camera for more creative control.

The video stabilization is smooth and effective, making handheld footage watchable even when moving around.

Performance

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 with an 8-core CPU and Adreno GPU  handles daily tasks with ease. Paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, the phone never feels sluggish during normal use.

AnTuTu score

To give you a clear picture of performance, it scored 1,294,309 at AnTuTu V11.

This places the phone in the solid mid-to-upper-mid range. For context, budget phones score around 300K-600K, and flagship devices score over 3M+.

This score indicates reliable performance for everyday tasks and multitasking.

Geekbench score

It showed decent GPU performance for casual and mid-tier gaming. Heavy games may require some setting adjustments, but overall gaming performance is solid.

Decent performance, but the choice of chipset could have been better

The phone excels at streaming, browsing, social media, and productivity apps. It handles multitasking smoothly without noticeable lag. Gaming is pleasant even for demanding games like Genshin Impact, though you might need to dial down settings for optimal frame rates.

The phone features a hybrid stereo speaker setup with the top speaker doubling as an earpiece and the bottom speaker as a full-fledged loudspeaker.

In terms of sound quality, the speakers are adequate but not exceptional. The audio comes across as a bit flat and could use more clarity and bass. For watching movies and series, the speakers are perfectly fine.

However, if you're planning to use this phone primarily for music listening, you might want to consider using headphones. The Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity supports LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LHDC 5.0, so wireless audio quality can be excellent with the right headphones.

This device also has WiFI 6, 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.4, and many of the basic connectivity features found on modern mid-rangers. It has dual SIM slots, but no eSIM support.

The realme 16 Pro+ ships with Android 16 and Realme UI 7.0, and it is guaranteed to receive 4 major Android OS updates (up to Android 20) plus 6 years of security patches (until 2032). This is the longest support cycle ever offered by realme.

In the future, realme UI is expected to be replaced by OPPO's ColorOS 17.

Generally, realme UI 16, based on Android 16 OS, arrived with its glass‑inspired aesthetics, advanced AI smarts, and richer personalization. It delivers a smoother, more intelligent, and visually refined experience than its predecessors.

Pros - Premium design, lightweight build, IP69 rating, stunning 144Hz AMOLED screen, impressive imaging capabilities, particularly the 10x zoom, 7,000mAh big battery

Cons - Speaker quality could be better, no microSD card slot, no eSIM, AI portrait enhancements can look overly edited (though toggleable), a little expensive for the performance

Verdict

One of the best camera phones in the segment

The realme 16 Pro+ 5G is an impressive phone that delivers on its "200MP Portrait Master" promise.

The camera system is genuinely one of the best in this segment, with exceptional portrait performance, great zoom capabilities, and vibrant color science that makes everyday photos look premium.

The 144Hz AMOLED display is smooth, bright, and absolutely beautiful. The design language is sophisticated and unique, and the build quality feels premium despite the mid-range positioning.

However, it's not without compromises. The audio quality is serviceable but uninspired; the performance, while capable, isn't flagship-level, and it targets users who prioritize cameras and display over raw processing power.

With memory costs pushing many mid‑range phones into flagship pricing territory, keeping this model under PHP 45,000 is a commendable move.

Overall, if you prioritize photography, then this mid-range phone is for you. It is a well-rounded premium mid-range phone that excels where it matters most: the camera and display. If photography is a priority for you, this is absolutely worth considering.
