Samsung to outsource DDR5 expansion; Philippines plant targeted for final assembly

Samsung DDR5 memory modules assembled in PH soon?

According to a story from South Korea, the company is shifting its in‑house factories toward high‑bandwidth memory (HBM) for artificial intelligence.

Basically, this means conventional DDR5 modules will not be produced by Samsung alone, but through partner companies in India, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

This outsourcing strategy is likely one of Samsung's key moves to help ease the global memory shortage.

In the Philippines, SFA Semicon Philippines in Clark, Pampanga is expected to play a key role. Samsung is transferring equipment from its Onyang campus in Korea to the local plant.

Starting in November, the facility will begin handling final assembly and testing of DDR5 modules, with a second expansion phase scheduled for next year.

It’s important to note that the DRAM chips themselves are still manufactured in Samsung's fabs abroad.

What happens in the Philippines is the last stage. They will be mounted onto circuit boards, assembled into DDR5 modules, and tested for quality before shipment.

Samsung is focusing its own factories on advanced HBM, while outsourcing partners handle the easier but important DDR5 assembly.

What it means for the Philippines?

Simple. It means more high‑tech work, exports, and a stronger role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
