Team Apple or team Huawei?

For the Apple iPhone X, it has a pair of 12MP sensors. One wide lens with at f/1.8 aperture size and a telephoto lens at f/2.4 aperture. This dual camera setup has 2x optical zoom, dual OIS for stabilization, laser AF, PDAF focus, and quad LED flash.

On the other hand, Huawei equipped the Mate 10 with the 3rd generation of Leica-branded dual cameras. In particular, the Mate 10 boasts a brighter 20MP f/1.6 monochrome sensor + 12MP f/1.6 RGB sensor. It also has a 4-in-1 Hybrid AF, OIS, 2x zoom, and dual tone LED flash.

Both also has different modes to choose from. Apple has the nice auto HDR mode, portrait mode effects, and different filters.

On the other hand, the Mate 10 flagship series comes many settings to choose from. It has a full manual mode, night mode, light painting effects, wide aperture mode, portrait beauty mode, real monochrome mode, and etc.

The cameras of the Mate 10 are assisted by A.I. that can 13 different objects and scenes to intelligently optimize picture settings.

But, for this comparison, we'll go for full point and shoot with no filter and no HDR. Why? Not everyone has the time to tinker the camera settings and go on manual or set the settings for other modes.

On paper, it appears that Huawei has the slight upper hand in terms of camera specs. But, we'll see. Apple knows mobile photography very well too! Let's check it out!

Scene 1 - Outdoor daylight 1
Both delivered top notch photo quality in this daylight. Apple has the slightly colder tone, while Huawei has the warmer output. Sharpness and details are about the same. We will just give this scene to Apple due to its slightly brighter exposure and a bit better dynamic range and contrast. iPhone X - 1 point

Scene 2 - Outdoor daylight 2
Result is identical with the first scene. Apple delivered the slightly blueish shot while Huawei is warmer in tone again. Apple iPhone X's exposure and dynamic range is a bit brighter and better again. iPhone X - 2 points

Scene 3 - Indoor 2x zoom

Choosing a winner in this scenario is extremely tough. This time Apple delivered the warmer color tone. However, we were surprised that Huawei's Hybrid digital zoom was able to compete with Apple's real 2x optical zoom. Details are a bit sharper too. Mate 10 - 1 point

Scene 4 - Indoor point and shoot bokeh
Both did a good job again. Apple delivered the shot with brighter exposure and slightly truer color. However, the image that Huawei captured is sharper and has better bokeh. Mate 10 - 2 points

Scene 5 - Indoor super close-up

Apple's colors are more realistic again. Huawei Mate 10's colors are also night, but we feel that it is slightly oversaturated (some may like that better though). Both has soft details though. But, the shot taken with the Mate 10 is noticeably sharper and better. Mate 10 - 3 points

Scene 6 - Indoor lowlight
Great match! This time, Huawei delivered the shot with the brighter exposure in lowlight. Thanks to its pair of f/1.6 lenses. It is also a bit sharper, but it doesn't look that natural compared with the shot taken with the iPhone X. Toss coin, I'll give it to Apple as I like its colors better. iPhone X - 3 points

Scene 7 - Night 1
Another good match! Both phones are really good lowlight photography phones. For this scene, Huawei did a slightly better job in preserving the details. Colors are identical. Mate 10 - 4 points

Scene 8 - Night close-up

Another highly debatable scene! This time, We like the colors delivered by both the iPhone X and the Mate 10. Bokeh quality are equal too! We'll pick the iPhone X due to its slightly more readable text. iPhone X - 4 points

Scene 9 - Night 2
On this scene, it depends on your preference. The Agave restaurant logo is our focus point. Huawei Mate 10's center-weighted shot delivered the noticeably sharper text with lesser overall noise. But somehow, dynamic range of the iPhone X is better. The leaves on the tree and other details are still visible. iPhone X - 5 points

Verdict

The winner of this point and shoot battle is the iPhone X with a score of 5 to 4.

But, Apple's win over Huawei is not an easy one. There's a lot of debatable scenes that could go either way.

Huawei's Mate 10 showed that it can compete with the iPhone X at almost half the price.

Technically, Huawei seems to be a bit better in lowlight, while the iPhone X is a tad better in daylight especially with exposure and dynamic range.
