The VP of Huawei Smartphones Li Changzu stated this about what Huawei's newest innovations mean in regards of visual expression:

Huawei's innovation in domains like AI, VR/AR, holographic imaging, and optics are given new forms of physical expression in our smartphones,These technologies also give rise to endless new possibilities in visual expression, making the creative process more enjoyable than ever before.

Huawei's mobile photography innovations took off back when they released the P9, which sported the dual Leica lens that we all know and love, back in April 2016. These kicked off a slew of great releases such as the Mate 9 and P10 line. Then this September 2017, Huawei announced the Kirin 970 with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that supports adaptive AI processing.

Huawei looks to keep innovating their visual imaging and optical technology to continue providing their users smartphones that can help advance the visual culture around the world.

Huawei is leading the way in advancing smartphone photography by providing phone cameras that can produce images that are can arguably go toe-to-toe with dedicated cameras. The NEXT-IMAGE plan will help Huawei realize their vision of a more professional and intuitive smartphone photography.

ICP and Huawei will hold various cross-media activities such as competitions, exhibitions and collections that will help improve visual expression. These will focus on three main things which are technology, style and culture. Huawei wants people to enjoy creating visually expressive images using their phones.

The NEXT-IMAGE awards will hold an important role in the NEXT-IMAGE plans. Smartphone users will be provided a gallery wherein they can submit their entries. Users will be able to share their best works to the world.

ICP's Executive Director Mark Lubell stated this about their partnership with Huawei:

The International Center of Photography is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. I am thrilled that the NEXT-IMAGE awards and future projects with Huawei will scale up ICP’s reach and impact, and allow both ICP and Huawei to find new ways to activate smartphone technology to increase visual literacy globally and across generations. The synergy between ICP and Huawei will inspire and increase our connections to each other through presenting new ways of learning andinnovative ways for creating and sharing visual content.

The title "NEXT-IMAGE" holds an important message behind it. They are looking for the next generation photographers that use the next generation tools to create the next generation of visual content. Image, on the other hand, refers to the images created whether  in static or dynamic forms.
