The Speed Score was computed through the companies' speeds for download and upload, Ookla said.

In the first six months, PLDT recorded an average speeds of 22.84 megabits per second (Mbps) for download and 23.45 mbps for upload. Its competitor only reached 10 mbps and 4.67 mbps for download and upload, respectively.

The fixed network award is based on 29,076,090 user-initiated Speedtest nationwide for the same period.

Its wireless subsidiary Smart was also awarded as the fastest mobile network after achieving a Speed Score of 14.98 compared to Globe's 9.93.

Smart hit an average speeds of 17.25 Mbps for download and 7.65 Mbps for upload, while Globe posted 11.11 Mbps and 5.12 Mbps for download and upload, respectively.

The data collected for mobile award was based on 2,118,464 user-initiated tests taken with Speedtest on LTE-capable devices in the Philippines for first quarter to second quarter.

PLDT continues to bolster its network through deploying and equipping its sites with LTE and LTE-Advanced technologies. To finance this modernization project, the group has earmarked P58 billion for this year.

The telco giant is targeting to double its LTE base stations to 17, 700 across the country and increase its LTE-equipped cell sites to over 6, 800 by early next year.

For its fiber-powered broadband, PLDT has expanded its reach to 4.4 million homes passed as of first quarter of 2018.
