Huawei Nova 3i vs. Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) - Photography Comparison

It's all about a camera comparison between the Chinese and South Korean smartphone giants this time!

Huawei Nova 3i is a hot-selling smartphone of the Chinese tech giant recently. It arrived in a dual rear camera setup of 16MP + 2MP. It is coupled with PDAF, contrast focus, master A.I., and LED flash.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) sports a 16MP + 5MP dual rear cameras with auto-focus and LED flash.

For selfies, the Huawei Nova 3i carries a 24MP + 2MP dual cameras in front. It has auto-focus, Master A.I., HDR pro, and screen flash. The Nova 3i has four cameras in total.

It is also nice to note that the Huawei Nova 3i boasts of its quad cameras over the dual rear cameras plus one selfie camera only of the Samsung Galaxy J8. 

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) features a 16MP selfie snapper with softlight LED flash.

Which of these two smartphones' cameras you think will win?

Scene 1 - Daylight 1

As expected, both smartphones did a decent job in capturing this scene. You can easily determine which is better at first look. The Nova 3i has nice exposure and sharpness over the underexposed shot of the Galaxy J8 (2018). But the shot of the J8 (2018) is sharper and has truer colors although the Nova 3i has a more dynamic wide range.

Scene 2 - Close up

Although the Nova 3i's shot is brighter than the other one, it looks a bit yellowish and has a smoothening effect. While the Galaxy J8 (2018) has sharp details and truer colors although I looked a bit blush on the shot. Galaxy J8 (2018) - 2 points

Scene 3 - Indoor

You can easily see the difference between the two on these photos. They both have shots but Nova 3i's shot of the chandelier has truer colors and sharper details. Nova 3i - 1 point

Scene 4 - Lowlight 1

The two smartphones have different take on this scene. Huawei Nova 3i displayed the true colors of the surroundings and the building. But the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) made the photo a little more visible with its exposure, which we liked better. Galaxy J8 (2018) - 3 points

Scene 5 - Lowlight 2

We tried the lowlight shots for the second time with a close-up subject. Huawei Nova 3i still did not win over the nice exposure and details the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) gives out on this scene. Galaxy J8 (2018) - 4 points

Scene 6 - Night mode

One of the highlights of the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) is its night mode. However, in this scene, you can easily see that the Huawei Nova 3i aced in taking the photo! The fast-moving cars on Nova 3i's shot looked like nice going forward parallel colors. Nova 3i - 2 points

Scene 7 - Daylight Selfie

You may argue with us with who should win on this scene. Huawei Nova 3i gave us a selfie with true colors, nice details, and sharpness. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) has a soft selfie shot and I looked a bit yellowish. Nova 3i - 3 points 

Scene 8 - Portrait Selfie

Both phones captured a soft-textured selfie. However, the Nova 3i did it better with nice colors, sharpness, and exposure. The Galaxy J8 (2018) missed out on these and made me look a bit yellowish. Nova 3i - 4 points

Scene 9- Indoor Selfie with Face Beauty

We set both smartphones on a level 4 Face Beauty on this scene. Huawei Nova 3i looks so beautified. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) looks beautified but still more natural-looking. Galaxy J8 (2018) - 5 points

Scene 10 - Lowlight Selfie

The 24MP selfie snapper of the Nova 3i is more evident on a lowlight scene. It clearly showed a low-lighted selfie with sharp details and nice colors. While the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) made the subject look yellowish-orangey with soft details. Nova 3i - 5 points

Verdict

The total comparison score is a TIE of 5 TO 5! Although the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) has brighter camera apertures of f/1.7 and f/1.9, the software inside the Huawei Nova 3i made it equalize the camera capabilities of the former. 

The Huawei Nova 3i proved to take photos with dynamice colors, nice details, and sharpness. But the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) fought with the same combatants although it missed out on the lowlight selfie. 

After all, both Huawei Nova 3i and Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) have nice cameras!
