Meet Alcatel 5V

One of them is the Alcatel 5V, a smartphone with modern looking design, speedy MediaTek entry-level chip, big battery capacity, and AI ready cameras.

Let's all have a look!

Unboxing/Accessories

The box
The box

Alcatel's 5V comes with a neat white box with blue text of the phone's model name. Inside, there's a 5V/2A USB wall charger, USB-C data/charging cable, earphones, case, and paper documents. It doesn't have a screen protector right off the bat, but gladly the phone has Dragontrail glass protection on the screen.

Build Quality/Design

Glass-like back
Glass-like back

The Alcatel 5V features a 3D glass-like glossy polycarbonate shell at the back and a matte textured plastic frame sandwiched in the middle of the 2.5D curved glass screen. Like what we stated above, there's Dragontrail glass protection for its big 6.2-inch screen. But, the glass-like material behind is prone to scratches and fingerprint smudges.

In front, the Alcatel 5V is one of the few with a 19:9 screen aspect ratio for the price. Alcatel also claimed that it has high 88 percent of screen-to-body ratio.

19:9 screen on a budget

The bezels on the sides are slim. The top bezel is also slim, but it has a cutout for the notch which houses the earpiece, selfie camera, proximity sensor, and an LED notification. The chin bezel is thicker, but it is still quite okay.

We do not think that the 88 percent of screen-to-body ratio claim of Alcatel is accurate. There's no way that its screen-to-body ratio is nearly as good as the Meizu 16th with 89.57 percent of screen-to-body ratio. The Meizu 16th

But to be fair with Alcatel, its bezels are considered as slim for the price. It is also slim for a device with 4,000mAh battery. It measures at 153.7 x 74.55 x 8.5 mm.

At the back, you will see the nice 3D glass-like curve with the dual-camera setup with dual-tone LED flash at the upper left portion and the fingerprint scanner in the upper middle part. We noticed that there's a hardly noticeable camera bump. That's nice!

On top, it still has a 3.5 mm headphone jack slot. There's a microphone there as well. Below, there's another mic. Then you will see the a micro USB port and a single speaker.

At left, the hybrid dual SIM/microSD card tray is there. At right, there's a textured power button and the volume up and down keys.

The handset has great overall design with good comfort in the hands. Surprisingly, it is not slippery to hold.

Initial findings

AnTuTu score of Alcatel 5V
AnTuTu score of Alcatel 5V

1. The Alcatel 5V features a neat design with decent construction for the price. The screen is 6.2-inch big with HD+ resolution. I wished that it was sharper than that. But fortunately, it has decent quality with acceptable sharpness and brightness.

2. Inside, it runs with the 12nm chip, the Helio P22 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz. It is paired with the PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It also has ample 3GB RAM. The storage is at 32GB. The battery capacity is its main highlight at 4,000mAh. Its overall specs is considered as a bit above-average for the price. Thanks to its big battery capacity. It would have been better if it has 4GB RAM though.

Actual performance is snappy so far. It can also play some heavy games on low or medium settings. It even has 700MHz 4G LTE connectivity.

3. It runs with Android 8.1 Oreo OS. It is has an app drawer with neat looking icons. It is feature-rich as well. It is also pretty snappy so far. We just noticed that it goes with a lot of bloats. Most of them are removable.

4. At the back, there's 2 cameras in total. There's a 12MP f/2.2 sensor and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor for bokeh shots. It also has PDAF and EIS. The bokeh comes with a refocus feature. There's AI for scene detection and face beauty too.

It can detect portrait, night, low light, food, animals, text, beach, blue sky, backlighting, and more modes. After detecting the scene, it will automatically adjust the contrast, saturation, brightness, sharpness, and resolution for the best shot possible.

For selfies, there's an 8MP f/2.8 camera with EIS. Do not expect much from it when it comes to low light shooting.

5. There's fingerprint reader at the back. It is speedy and accurate so far. The face unlock is also quite fast. It a bit slower in low light, but it still works. There's an LED notification on the left side of the notch. There's an OTG and gyroscope sensor as well.

As of the moment

The Alcatel 5V has the design, specs, and features that can hold its own with similarly priced smartphones from competing brands. It can be considered as an Alcatel device with pretty aggressive price tag.

It may still have a hard time against other bang for the buck devices, but it is decent so far.
