WhatsApp bested Facebook?

According to its report, from January 2017 to October 18, WhatsApp grew by 30 percent, defeating Facebook which recorded 20 percent growth, and Facebook Messenger with only 15 percent growth.

This was even supported by Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement in January that the platform just hit 1.5 billion active monthly users.

India was leading the pack with the most number of active WhatsApp users, App Annie noted. It was followed by Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, and Russia.

The firm also attributed WhatsApp’s growth to its value-free alternative to standard telecommunication services like SMS.

Although their value proposition has subsequently expanded, this core offering has resulted in continued success in emerging markets where the cost of using a mobile device is still high relative to average income, App Annie said.

However, while the numbers were good, WhatsApp may be facing a major adjustment as one of its co-founder has decided to leave amid alleged conflicts on Zuckerberg’s pronouncement to inject ads on the platform.
