The Philippines has taken over the internet space as Filipinos have been branded as the world’s heaviest internet users.

According to the Digital 2019 report by Hootsuite and We are Social, Filipinos’ internet usage climbed to an average of 10 hours and two minutes, compared to the 9 hours and 29 minutes in 2018.

This inched them past Thailand to become the country that spends the most amount of time online, the Digital 2019 report said.

Given this increase as well as the fact that 70 percent of internet users do online shopping, the report said local businesses must grab this opportunity and boost their digital presence.

The study also noted mobile internet continues to gain traction among Filipinos as one way to access internet in the country. Using mobile internet, Filipino spend an average time of four hours and 58 minutes.

Despite controversy around privacy, hacking, fake news, and all the other negative aspects of online life, the world continues to embrace the Internet and social media, said Nathan McDonald, co-founder and Group chief executive officer of We Are Social.

On the global scene, the Digital 2019 also revealed over a million new people go online each day and almost half of the world’s population log in to their favorite social media platforms.
