Here comes a new mid-range challenger!
The Samsung Galaxy A50 launched in the Philippines with a price tag of PHP 17,990. This is the same price tag of the POCO F1 when it first launched. Let's see how they match up.
|
Super nice Galaxy A50 screen |
Build/Design - The Samsung Galaxy A50 feels like it is made out of a 3D glass-like material with a hardened polycarbonate frame. It feels light while maintaining a solid feel when holding it. The bezels are slim and the use of the Infinity-U notch gives the phone a gorgeous look.
The POCO F1 has a unibody design with a polycarbonate material. Since this was a 2018 device, the notch is a bigger considering this was the trend at that time. It has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which is a plus.
Both of the devices sport a build quality that you would expect for a mid-range smartphone. The POCO F1 has Gorilla Glass 3 protection while the Samsung Galaxy A50 has no mention of it.
The POCO F1 goes in graphite black, steel blue, rosso red and kevlar while the Samsung Galaxy A50 goes in blue, white and black.
Display - The Samsung Galaxy A50 has a 6.4-inch 2.5D Super AMOLED screen with 2340 x 1080 FHD+ resolution and 403 ppi pixel density. It has over 90 percent screen-to-body ratio due to the Infinity-U notch.
The POCO F1 has a slightly smaller 6.18-inch 2.5D IPS display with 2246 x 1080 FHD+ resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It also has 403 ppi pixel density as well.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 is one of the best displays found in this price range. Super AMOLED displays in this price range is pretty rare. It also has a better screen-to-body ratio due to the smaller notch.
The POCO F1 is still impressive with good color accuracy, contrast and blacks. It is great considering it also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
Specs - Both are equipped with 10nm chips. Samsung Galaxy A50 has a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 octa-core processor with Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, and a 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging.
The POCOPHONE F1 has a 2.8GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 845 AIE octa-core processor, Adreno 630 GPU, 6GB LPDDR4 RAM with 64GB of expandable storage and a 4,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.
The Samsung Galaxy A50's spec sheet is still an impressive improvement for a Samsung mid-range device. But, the POCOPHONE F1 still has flagship grade specs on a mid-range body. We gotta give the storage advantage to the Galaxy A50 since its base PHP 17,990 model sports a 128GB ROM compared to F1's 64GB.
Cameras - In terms of cameras, the Samsing Galaxy A50 has a triple rear camera setup. It has a combination of a 25MP f/1.7 primary sensor + 8MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle lens + 5MP depth sensor with AF and LED flash. For selfies, it has a 25MP f/2.0 sensor.

Samsung Galaxy A50 advantages - Better screen-to-body ratio, Super AMOLED display, msmaller notch, triple camera system, In-Display fingerprint sensor
POCOPHONE F1 advantages - Better CPU/GPU, more camera features, stereo speakers
Our thoughts
POCOPHONE F1, in terms of sheer specs, is still a beast. It has 2018 flagship-grade specs in a mid-range form factor and price tag.
However, Samsung is making a great push for a resurgence in the mid-range arena with their current releases including the Galaxy A50.
Galaxy A50 highlights great design, Super AMOLED screen, triple cameras, and decent overall specs.
