Recently, we unboxed the BOYA BY-MM1, a universal cardioid microphone. It is advertised as the starter vlogging mic to get.

BOYA BY-MM1 is a beginner-friendly cardioid mic that is suitable for vlogging, audio recordings and more. It is touted to be compatible with phones, tablets, PC, cameras, and camcorders.

We were able to get our hands on this mic via Juan Gadget, the official distributor of BOYA in the Philippines.

One of the most impressive things about this product is its price. It goes for only PHP 1,000. Other microphones that look and function like the BY-MM1 usually range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 4,000. BOYA is well known for providing quality products even at a very affordable price.

Inside the box

Looking at the box, it is described as a lightweight, compact directional microphone. Its body is made out of rugged metal which implies great durability. It is a plug-and-play device that means no batteries needed.

The furry windshield

Additionally, a furry windproof shield is included to minimize wind and environmental noise when recording outdoors. It also comes with an anti-shock mount for reducing vibration, cable and handling noise.

For the cords, there are two included. There is one 3.5mm to TRS audio output for cameras, camcorders, audio recorders, and other audio/video devices. Another one is the 3.5mm to TRRS audio output cable for IOS and Android smartphones, tablets and Macs.

We love BOYA's effort to include a leather carrying case which looks good. To round it off, paper works include a warranty card and a quick-start guide.

BOYA did a respectable job with the BY-MM1. It looks good, it has a great build and lots of accessories in the box. The only thing lacking is a USB-C dongle that is getting more necessary these days.

Audio recordings that we got came out clear and respectable for a mic that is designed to lessen noise during outdoor recordings. It slightly reduced the environmental noise and our voice came out quite clear and audible.

However, do not expect it to be as clear and crisp as their own similarly priced lapel mic option.

The lapel is a better option is still better for us if you need clearer audio. It just can't accommodate group recordings like the BY-MM1 directional mic that can record multiple sources at once.

Our thoughts

If you are just delving into the recording world and on the hunt for an affordable mic then the BOYA BY-MM1 is a decent outdoor mic for PHP 1,000. It provides a pretty robust package with most of the essentials needed on a starter mic.

At this price point, it is hard to find a mic that is better than this other than BOYA's own budget lapel mic.
