Positive despite the Trump attack

According to a report from Counterpoint Research, although the overall smartphone shipment volume slid by 9 percent year-on-year during the April-June period, Huawei still captured 16 percent of the market share.

It posted good numbers, particularly in its own country China, notwithstanding the US ban in May.

Amid the heating trade war between the US and China, an order was signed by President Donald Trump declaring a national emergency against potential threats to information and communications technology and services.

Its Department of Commerce also followed suit as it included Huawei on a blacklist, hindering the firm to do business with American companies. It also put Huawei on its "Entity List", signaling the need for US firms to secure a special license to sell products to the Chinese company.

While there was no direct effect on the second-quarter performance, Huawei may see its overseas market share decrease in the next quarter, said Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research.

The effect of the ban did not translate into falling shipments during this quarter, which will not be the case in the future. In the coming quarters, Huawei is likely to be aggressive in its home market and register some growth there, but it will not be enough to offset for the decline in its overseas shipments. This will further lead to the decline of the overall smartphone market in 2019, Pathak said.

The embattled company, however, remained bullish about its global operations despite issues being thrown at the Chinese firm.

George Li, country manager at Huawei Consumer Business Group Philippines, earlier expressed optimism about the group's vision to continue delivering innovations and premium products to its users across the world.
