Bang-for-the buck flagship fight

Build/Design - OnePlus 7 has a combination of glass and metal for the body. At the back, it has a 2.5D glass protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Xiaomi Mi 9 sports a glass back as well with a metal frame. Both devices deliver a very premium feel and look.

Both have In-Display fingerprint sensors, face unlock and a small notch up top. Both sport gorgeous color choices as well.

Display - OnePlus 7 has a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED screen with 2340 x 1080 FHD+ resolution and 402 ppi pixel density. It also has an unspecified Gorilla Glass protection.

Xiaomi Mi 9

Xiaomi Mi 9 has a 6.39-inch Super AMOLED screen with 2280 x 1080 FHD+ at 395 ppi. It also has Gorilla Glass 6 protection.

OnePlus 7 sport a slightly taller display. However, most of the display specs are pretty similar except for the differences in the type of AMOLED panel used. Without knowing the specific level of Gorilla Glass protection the OnePlus 7 has, we cannot be certain which model has a better one.

Specs - In terms of performance, OnePlus 7 has a 2.84GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, Adreno 640 GPU, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 256GB UFS 3.0 storage and a 3,700MAh battery with 20W Dash Charge.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a 2.84GHz Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor as well, Adreno 640 GPU, up to 12GB RAM, up to 256GB UFS 2.1 storage, and a 3,300mAh battery with a 27W fast charging tech along with 20W fast wireless charging.

Although both devices have the CPU and GPU, Mi 9 can have up to 12GB of RAM. OnePlus 7 has a faster storage solution. In terms of battery, OnePlus 7 has a bigger capacity but the Mi 9 has faster-charging tech and wireless charging to boot.

Both are also packed with 700MHz 4G LTE support.

Cameras - In terms of cameras, both are impressive. OnePlus 7 has a dual camera setup with a 48MP f/1.7 Sony IMX586 main sensor with PDAF, OIS, EIS + 5MP f/2.4 w/ dual-tone LED flash. It also has a 16MP f/2.0 Sony IMX471 selfie camera.

Xiaomi Mi 9 has a triple camera setup with 48MP f/1.75 Sony IMX586 main sensor + 16MP f/2.2 Sony IMX481 w/ 117-degree ultra wide-angle sensor + 12MP f/2.2 Samsung S5K3M5 2x telephoto sensor with PDAF, CAF, and LED flash. A 20MP f/2.0 selfie sensor with AI portraits.

OnePlus 7 has OIS and EIS on its side but the triple camera setup of the Xiaomi Mi 9 offers more functionality and features. For selfies, Xiaomi Mi 9 is on the lead as well.

Our thoughts

Both the OnePlus 7 and Xiaomi Mi 9 are superb bang-for-the-buck offerings under PHP 30K.

If you are looking for a device with three rear cameras, better selfies, wireless charging, and a slightly more affordable price tag, Mi 9T could be the best pick.

But, if you want a phone with a larger battery capacity

If you are looking for a bigger battery, slightly bigger screen, faster storage, stereo speakers with a comparable performance then get the OnePlus 7.
