With the introduction of the A9 2020, OPPO aims to improve the mobile photography game of the masses. How? It is a mid-ranger with a rear quad-camera system.

A mid-ranger with four back cameras! |

At the back, the company loaded the said device with a 48MP f/1.8 primary shooter paired with an 8MP f/2.24 119-degree ultra wide-angle secondary camera, a 2MP f/2.4 monochrome third camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth camera.
OPPO also added its usual Dazzle Color Mode for punchier colors and Ultra Night Mode 2.0 handheld night mode for crisper low light images.

There's a notch for the selfie camera |
For selfies, there's a 16MP f/2.0 snapper with AI face beauty found in the selfie.
|
Here's a closer look |
Even if the monochrome camera is a bit "gimmicky" on paper, it looks to be a pretty formidable mid-range camera phone so far.
Here are some of our shots. Let's do it!
Rear Camera Samples
|
Normal daylight 1 |
|
Ultra-wide daylight 1 |
On auto mode, daylight images turned out okay. They are crisp and sharp with neutral colors. I would also like to note that even the ultra-wide mode has nice details and consistent colors.
|
Normal daylight 2 |
|
Ultra-wide daylight 2 |
My a bit of a concern is the dynamic range, there are times where it is a bit off like in these images. The ultra-wide cam has some sort of battery distortion. But, that's normal for wide lenses.
|
Close-up 1 |
|
Close-up 2 |
For close-up images in well-lit scenes, the camera performance of this device is considered great for a mid-ranger. It has an AI-assisted mode to allow us to take better macro shots.
|
Bokeh effect, portrait mode |
And look! It can take images with a close-to-realistic-looking bokeh effect. It has above-average subject to background separation and edge detection.
|
Indoor normal |
|
Indoor wide |
Indoor images are also quite nice with respectable details, colors, and dynamic range.
The wide cam in this scenario is a bit more contrasty. We noticed that there's a bit of grain as well.

Indoor close-up 1 |
|
Indoor close-up 2 |
|
Indoor close-up 3 |
Again, even with artificial light, shooting close-up images are enjoyable with this camera phone.
|
Low light sample |
In low light, it will be soft and grainy. Though colors are still quite punchy. The dynamic range is decent as well.
But, like most modern phones, it has its own handheld night mode, OPPO calls their own the Ultra Night Mode 2.0.
|
Night mode sample |
The night mode made my shot clearer. It showed way better exposure control as well. It isn't the best night mode we have tested for the price though. The photo saving time is about 10 seconds. But HEY, at least it is there.

Normal vs night |
It isn't the best night mode we have tested for the price though. But, at least it is there.
|
Night mode 2 |
|
Ultra-wide night mode |
And by the way, while it is quite grainy, it has an option to activate the night mode in ultra wide-angle mode. It improved my low light wide images a little.
Selfie Camera Samples
|
Daylight selfie with face beauty and bokeh effect |
For selfies, its 16MP snapper turned out okay. The details in daylight are crisp and it has respectable colors. Even on AI face beauty mode, it is not too soft. The bokeh mode needs improvement though.
|
Usual indoor selfie |
Indoor shots are still decent, though it won't have the nicer exposure and details from daylight images.
|
Low light selfie 1 |
|
Grainy in low light |
It struggled in low light as expected. Use the screen flash mode as much as possible.
Quick thoughts
OPPO A9 2020 shoots good to great images in most scenarios. I like the fact that it allowed me to shoot respectable wide-angle and even close-up shots.
There are few kinks to fix like night mode photo saving speed and the bokeh for selfies, but for a mid-ranger, it is doing a fine job so far.
Let's hope that OPPO will price this one right and make it the most affordable quad-cam phone yet.
