US government wants participation in 5G development

In aim of still leading technology developments, the American government may ease its restrictions against the Chinese company, a year after it placed Huawei under its "entity list", which prohibits the latter to have business deals with US firms.

The US Commerce Department and other agencies are just waiting for the publication of the rule change in the Federal Register.

The United States will not cede leadership in global innovation, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said.

Ross, however, stressed that the US government would continue to be vigilant against potential threats to its national security.

The department is committed to protecting US national security and foreign policy interests by encouraging US industry to fully engage and advocate for US technologies to become international standards, Ross added.

The Commerce Department said American companies' participation in the development "influences the future of 5G, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, and other cutting-edge technologies."

Huawei has yet to comment on the news.
