Viber and GCash!

Viber, GCash partner for QR code payments

The partnership, which was announced on Thursday, will enable FoodPH merchants to receive orders' payments via QR codes from GCash.

FoodPH, introduced in December last year, is Viber’s official food directory where users can search for a specific type of food, a certain cuisine, or look for a dish based on location.

Viber said food sellers only have to forward their QR codes to their customers. The QR code will then be scanned using the GCash app to pay for the orders.

The deal with GCash as well as Globe myBusiness will provide "seamless transaction" between sellers and customers amid the pandemic when the COVID-19 continues to linger in the country, the company said.

We’re extremely excited to roll out this new feature on Viber, especially now that people are still encouraged to stay at home amid the ongoing pandemic. As we’ve made the experience as convenient as possible, it encourages customers to support local businesses and order their food from MSMEs, said David Tse, Senior Director, Rakuten Viber.

Fred Levy, Chief Commercial Officer of GCash, meanwhile said this move can help small businesses to bounce back from the impact of the pandemic.

GCash used to generate QR codes only for bigger businesses to help them streamline their point-of-sale transactions. Along with Viber, we have realized that MSMEs, especially food businesses that have been hardly hit by the pandemic, will also greatly benefit from this feature, Levy said.
