Telcos finish initial tests for MNP

PH telcos launch a joint venture

DITO Telecommunity, Globe Telecom, and PLDT's Smart Communications have formed a joint venture, dubbed as Telecommunications Connectivity Inc., as the Philippine government moves to implement the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Act by September 30.

The Mobile Number Portability Act will be up for full implementation by the end of September, allowing mobile customers to change service providers while keeping their original number.

The initial tests of their technical capabilities and interoperability were conducted earlier this week.

The telcos, in a joint statement issued Friday, said the outcome is "within expectations."

After the initial tests, the groups would then streamline the external porting process, implement fraud and security safeguards, optimize systems and back-end business operations.

By conducting a successful actual porting test, DITO, Globe, and Smart secured initial insights and details on how to address remaining concerns and possible challenges, before making the service available to all customers, the telcos said in the statement.

Officials from the three major players said the MNP will allow them to serve customers better as they have the freedom to choose their network provider.
