Exploding Kittens animated series and mobile game coming to Netflix!

For the very first time, Netflix is building a TV and mobile game franchise from a card game.

The streaming giant just announced that it will launch an animated series and mobile game in collaboration with the creators of Exploding Kittens. 

Head of External Games at Netflix Leanne Loombe explained that the aim of this project is to offer members great entertainment they’ll love in whatever format they may enjoy, "whether it be a game or an animated series".

According to the press release, the Netflix show will have an adult animated comedy genre and produced by King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels. 

In a nutshell, the strategic card game about cats and destruction was designed by Elan Lee and Inman, based on comics from The Oatmeal and Shane Small. The creators launched a Kickstarter to design the card game. 

The card game was able to set a record for the platform and raised USD 8.7 million. Allegedly, there are more than 18 million copies have been sold as of writing.

Exploding Kittens series is about the eternal conflict between heaven and hell as it reaches epic proportions when both God and the devil are sent to Earth — in the bodies of chunky house cats.

Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abraham Lim (The Boys), Lucy Liu (Elementary), Ally Maki (Wrecked), Mark Proksch (What We Do in the Shadows), and Sasheer Zamata (Woke) will be the voices behind the upcoming show.

Meanwhile, the mobile game will have the same mechanics as the card game. However, the developers are adding two new exclusive cards that reveal the position of the Exploding Kitten card and reverse the order of the deck. 

Players will have single and multiplayer options. Netflix noted that this game is FREE for all Netflix subscribers, without additional fees or in-app purchases. Head of the adult animation at Netflix Mike Moon said,

The co-development of a game and animated series breaks new ground for Netflix.  And we couldn’t think of a better game to build a universe around than Exploding Kittens, one of the most inventive, iconic, and original games of this century! Netflix is the perfect place to explore this growing franchise and we are so fortunate to be working with this incredible team!

Netflix said that it will announce further details about the Exploding Kittens animated series, including which actors are voicing what roles.

The mobile game is set to finish in May then additional cards and game mechanics will follow later. The animated series, on the other hand, is expected to debut in 2023.
