The telco says this was achieved through their constant effort in making their security tools and platforms better so that they can detect and block unlawful SMS and web blaster devices. Meanwhile, Globe employees also have access to reporting channels and processes to quickly collect and disseminate information or concerns about fraud and scams.

Smishing occurs mainly through mobile text messaging, in which scammers attempt to mislead victims into giving away their personal data. Scammers then use this data to take over a victim’s financial accounts,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief Information Security Officer.

He continued the company is collaborating with government and industry stakeholders on threat information sharing programs as well as public awareness campaigns via SMS, website, and social media to keep the public informed about spam and scams.

Globe presented a framework of cooperation to the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) in March of this year, with the objective of establishing data and intelligence sharing between Globe and BAP member banks for fraud detection and prevention. Globe and Unionbank signed their first Memorandum of Agreement on March 25, 2022.

The telecommunication company has prioritized Internet safety and cybersecurity programs in recent years. Last year, the company blocked 1.15 billion scams and spam messages, approximately 7,000 mobile numbers associated with fraudsters, and 2,000 unofficial social media profiles and phishing webpages last 2021.

Bonifacio urged its customers to report these scam messages at the Globe's website spam reporting mechanism. He also added customers can also do this using the GlobeOne App, Facebook Messenger, and other agent-assisted platforms.

Moreover, Globe Telcom also said Android users can also set filters to spam text on their devices by downloading the "Messages" app of Google. This app features a spam protection setting that can let users block unwanted or unsolicited messages.

Finally, Globe says anti-smishing actions are part of its overall goal of safeguarding technological advancements, which are essential for economic growth and development. This is also coherent with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals infrastructure and innovation targets.
