It continued that a particular target for the said chips will be Windows on ARM devices. Right now the Taiwanese firm makes processors for entry-level category Chromebooks and has approximately 20 percent market share.

With this, MediaTek can compete in the high-end laptop market with a flagship chip and a combo of an NVIDIA GPU.

To recall, NVIDIA had ARM-based designs like the one inside the Nintendo Switch and NVIDIA Shield (X1 Tegra Chip). Although both are quite outdated at this point.

Additionally, the firm manufactures ARM boards with GeForce GPUs, however, these are mostly used for machine learning activities. Similar to the Jetson Orin NX includes a Cortex-A78AE CPU with 8 cores, 16GB of RAM, a 1,024-core Ampere GPU with 32 Tensor cores, and a TDP of 10–25W.

The aforementioned chips are not supported with Android or ChromeOS. Meanwhile, there's a LineageOS port that works but isn't supported by NVIDIA. That's where the expertise of MediaTek comes in since they've been working on ARM-based processors for a long time.

It is expected that NVIDIA GPUs will enhance the gaming prowess of MediaTek processors which currently use ARM GPU designs. And there's a possibility of including NVIDIA's industry-leading AI capabilities as well which in turn may be a good match-up against Apple's M-series notebooks.

As of now, it is unclear whether MediaTek and NVIDIA will focus only on Windows or Chromebooks or they will target a toned-down version for smartphones too. Its also worth mentioning that Samsung and AMD could be closely monitoring this partnership.

What do you guys think?
