Samsung announces its new Tactical Edition portfolio, including custom Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy XCover6 Pro built for military applications.
Samsung first produced the custom tactical read-only memory (ROM) in 2012 which led to the launch of the Galaxy S9 Tactical Edition. This established the Tactical Edition line of commercially available mobile devices that Samsung says integrate hardware and software that were designed for military operations.
Samsung claims that currently, the Galaxy S20 Tactical Edition supports thousands of DOD personnel across all service branches and has proven itself in a wide range of assignments and environments.
At SOF week in Tampa Florida, Samsung introduces the two initial Tactical Edition models based on the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy XCover6 Pro. These smartphones will be mission ready and will meet military security requirements and will seamlessly integrate with a range of existing peripherals and ecosystems.
The Galaxy S23 Tactical edition will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 while the XCover6 Pro Tactical edition will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset.
These phones will work with Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), and Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit (BATDOK).
Both smartphones are IP68 certified for dust and water resistance and will feature night vision mode to accommodate viewing with night vision optical devices. The Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition will feature Gorilla Glass Victus+, an Armor Aluminum frame and a rugged military case that can be chest-mounted or worn on the forearm. While the Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition is MIL-STD-810H compliant.
Lastly, both phones will support Samsung Dex.
Not much else is known about the smartphones themselves but Samsung says that these devices will be valuable tools that can help warfighters achieve their missions.
