Transsion making a name in the global smartphone market
Based on the latest research from Canalys, the group received a boost from the African market and other emerging markets, allowing it to enter the top five of the list for the first time.
Canalys said Transsion shipped 22.7 million units, translating to 22 percent annual growth.
Transsion rapidly captured the pent-up low-end demand in the Middle East and African markets where the stabilizing foreign exchange also supported channel partner confidence. Additionally, its expansion in Latin America in the past few quarters has allowed the vendor to capture low-end demand in some under-penetrated markets, said Amber Liu, Analyst at Canalys.
vivo is the former number 5 brand.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Samsung is still on top with 53 million units, followed by US-based Apple with 43 million shipments.
China's Xiaomi and OPPO, on the other hand, secured the third and fourth spots, respectively. Xiaomi shipped 33.2 million units, while OPPO had a 10 percent market share.

Canalys said the number of smartphone shipments dropped by 10 percent to 258.2 units.
The decline in the global smartphone market has once again narrowed, helped by an industry-wide inventory reduction and signs of demand recovery in certain regional markets, said Liu.
