Apple updates iPhone 12 software in France

Reports said French authorities approved Apple's iPhone 12 software update that settled the issue of radiation levels.

To recall, France in September banned the sale of the iPhone 12 after its test showed that the device's specific absorption rate did not comply with EU standards. This refers to the level of radio waves emitted by the device.

Apple has denied the issue. A Reuters report also cited the company saying that it has provided France with different lab results to prove its compliance with regulations and standards in the world.

A separate report by Gizmodo said France's L'Agence Nationale des Fréquences, or ANFR, verified the update by testing the phone's specific absorption rate. They found that levels were back in compliance with France’s testing standards, thus the ban on phone sales could be lifted.

The tests were performed by an accredited laboratory and found the specific absorption rate was 3.94W/kg after the update. This was lower than the 5.74W/kg prior to the update and the EU standard of 4.0 W/kg.

The data was taken when phones are kept close to the body, such as inside a user's pocket.

Reuters cited the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection in an earlier report that this kind of issue can lead to health effects like burns or heat stroke depending on the duration of exposure.
