For the longest time, Apple's iPhones have been the king of receiving software support in the world of smartphones. Normally, those handsets get at least 5 years of updates—for example, the iPhone X of 2017 was able to obtain up to iOS 16 last year.
However, the recent announcement of Google appears to give Apple a run for its money.
In a blog post, Google commits that the newly announced Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will receive 7 years of software updates. It includes Android OS upgrades, security updates, and regular Feature Drops.
At the moment, the Pixel 8 phones run with the latest Android 14.
The company said that this move means that the said handsets will be supported all the way into 2023 or up to Android 21?
Google also claims that no other major smartphone brand offers this committed level of support and longevity making the new Pixels "a more sustainable" smartphone choice.
This move will also make your phone feel new all the time as it will receive the newest features of Android in the committed years to come. It'll be tested to make the phones more secure with bug fixes for an improved overall experience.
My only concern now is Google has yet to make the Pixel phones officially available in the country.
That means that if you will buy a Pixel in the Philippines, the unit you will get was technically smuggled has not been tested to work properly in the country, and has no official local warranty.
Let's hope that Google will consider our market though as its new phones appear to be really solid.
