Ookla: PH internet is improving, but still lags behind some SEA countries (Q2 2024)

Based on the latest analysis by Ookla, fixed broadband speeds in the Philippines are gradually improving.

PH internet continues to improve

The firm said that it could be attributed to the combined efforts of ISPs and government agencies to expand the coverage and promote the transition of old fix-line connections to faster fiber lines.

Quarter by quarter the fixed broadband performance in the Philippines with a speed of 92.42 Mbps in Q2 2024. Ookla said that the "accelerated fiber deployments" resulted in a 50 percent improvement in broadband speed in the country.

Regions in Luzon still dominate fixed broad performance in the country with download and upload speeds surpassing 90 Mbps. Calabarzon has the fastest median download speed of 99.55 Mbps in Q 2024.

NCR has the highest percentage of households with access to fiber broadband at 26.4 percent. Calabarzon has 23.4 percent.

Easter Visayas (Region VIII) has the lowest median fixed download speed score at just 38.43 Mbps.

However, it is still behind some of its Southeast Asian peers.

For example, the media download speed in Malaysia is 132.72 Mbps, Vietnam with 135 Mbps, Thailand with 231.01 Mbps, and Singapore with 284.93 Mbps.

But the Philippines is ahead of Brunei with 77.5 Mbps and Indonesia with 31.42 Mbps.

While slower than fiber at 48.14 Mbps despite being more expensive, Starlink satellite service could still be a viable alternative, especially in locations with no access to fixed broadband or with slower DSL connections.
