OPPO and Ericsson sign deal for Global 5G Patent

The deal covers global patent cross-licenses, technical cooperation, market growth, and other engagements. The global cross-license encompasses standard-essential patents (SEPs) for cellular communication technologies, including 5G.

We are pleased to announce that we have reached a global cooperation agreement with Ericsson. The global patent cross-license between two companies covers cellular standard-essential patents including 5G. This agreement reflects the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property and lays a solid foundation for our collaboration. OPPO has always respected intellectual property, advocated for reasonable fees, and supported the establishment of a long-term healthy IP ecosystem. We aim to resolve IP disputes between licensors and licensees through friendly negotiation, with mutual respect for the value of patents, said Feng Ying, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of OPPO

Since its founding around 20 years ago, OPPO has prioritized long-term investment in research and development, deepening its expertise in vital sectors and transforming inventions into valuable intellectual property and user experience.

As of June 30, 2024, OPPO noted they have submitted over 103K patent applications internationally, with over 57,000 awarded. Utility patents account for 91 percent of total patent applications. In 2023, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) placed OPPO ninth globally in patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), marking its fifth year in the top 10 rankings.

OPPO, a global pioneer in smart device innovation and a key holder of 5G SEPs, is a technical standard innovator and implementer, the brand claims. It added they are promoting the use of technical standards throughout the industry.

The brand also reported that as of June 30, 2024, they had filed 6,200 patent applications for 5G communication technologies in over 40 countries and regions. It has registered over 3,700 5G families with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and submitted over 12,000 standard documents to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

Finally, the "Global 5G Standard Essential Patents and Standard Proposal Study Report (2023)" by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and the "Global 5G Standard-Essential Patent Strength Report" published by IPlytics in October 2023 positions OPPO among the top globally in 5G SEP strength.
