HMD Fusion announced with a modular design and comes with several customization options.
The smartphone features interchangeable covers that not only enhance its aesthetics but also add practical functionalities, ranging from wireless charging capabilities to rugged protection and even a ring light for improved selfies and live streaming.
Smart Pins on the back of the device allow for attachment, and HMD will allow you to 3D print your designs using the open-source HMD Fusion Development Toolkit. Sales of HMD's first-party Fusion outfits are set to arrive in Q4.
It's not the first time we've seen this approach. Remember, CMF Phone 1 also had a similar idea about modular design.
The HMD Fusion boasts a semi-transparent plastic casing, designed for straightforward repairs just like the HMD Skyline, providing quick access to the battery, screen, and essential components. Additionally, HMD has committed to supplying spare parts through iFixit for the next seven years.
Anyways, the device features a 6.56-inch LCD (IPS) HD+ screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 50MP selfie shooter located on its centered punch hole.
Inside, it is powered by the 4nm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC paired with 6GB/8GB RAM and 128GB/512GB storage.
For battery, it uses a 5,000mAh capacity with 33W fast charging support and USB-C.
For cameras, it has a 108MP main shooter with an EIS + 2MP depth helper.
Other features mentioned are an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Connectivity features are 5G SA/NSA, dual 4G VoLTE, WiFi (2.4GHz/5GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and GPS.
For OS, the phone runs Android 14 with years of OS updates and 3 years of security patches.
