A crucial source of information for Filipinos

Five years after the House Committee on Legislative Franchises denied ABS-CBN’s franchise application, a lawmaker has introduced legislation to reinstate its broadcasting franchise, citing the company's clearance from allegations by government agencies.

Albay Representative Joey Salceda's House Bill 11252 seeks to grant the company a 25-year franchise "to construct, install, operate and maintain television and broadcast stations in the Philippines," reports said.

In its explanatory note, Salceda said the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Bureau of Internal Revenue have already "certified that the franchise grantee did not violate ownership restrictions and did not have pending tax liabilities."

The lawmaker noted that prior to the rejection, ABS-CBN was the source of news and entertainment for 36 percent of Filipinos. Its regional network reach was also the source for news and updates on impending disasters, making it a crucial element for disaster risk reduction strategies, he added.

ABS-CBN said in a statement that it was grateful for Salceda's support and belief in the company's contributions and mission to serve the public.

It also thanked Reps. Gabriel Bordado Jr., Arlene Brosas, France Castro, Raoul Manuel, Johnny Pimentel, and Rufus Rodriguez who have previously filed similar bills.

According to the House's website, the bill is pending on first reading after it was filed on January 7.

What do you think guys?
