Improving mass transit
According to a report by Inquirer, Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants to improve the country's transportation system—from one centered on private cars to one prioritizing mass transportation.
In a press conference, Dizon admitted that the current transportation system is too "car-centric."
Build wider streets, and of course, buying cars is also a function of the development of our fellow countrymen, so we have to veer away from that and I think we are veering away from that and that is what the President wants, Dizon was quoted saying.
Instead of building new roads, Dizon said the solution is making “high-capacity mass transit” and making cities more conducive to walking.
Meanwhile, Dizon said he does not agree with proposing schemes such as four-day work days, congestion fees, or the closure of some roads to private cars.
The transport chief emphasized that implementing solutions requires thorough study to guarantee a positive impact on commuters and that such decisions are not his alone to make.
