The end of an era
Skype was created in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011. It was one of the most influential voice over IP (VoIP) platforms for the last two decades. The service is set to shut down in May 2025. Skype users can export their account data until January 2026, and after that, it will be permanently deleted.
Microsoft is streamlining its free consumer communications offerings to be able to adapt to customers' needs. Microsoft Teams (FREE) offers similar services but with caveats. Group Calls are limited to 60 minutes only, and users cannot use pay-as-you-go calling and SMS like they would Skype Credit.
Skype users who sign in to Microsoft Teams with their Skype Credentials will find their Skype contacts and chats saved and ready and waiting for them. The Teams app not only allows free calls and free messaging, but it also comes with meetings and communities.
Paid services that use Skype Credit or a Subscription can still be used with the Skype Dial Pad.
How to move from Skype to Microsoft Teams for FREE?
- Open the Skype App with your account logged in
- Tap Start Using Teams
- Download the Microsoft Teams App
- Open the Microsoft Teams App
- If the previous steps were met, you will be automatically logged in with your Skype Account with your data, chats, and contacts synced seamlessly.
