A successor 10 years later

Sony announced the third generation of its beloved premium full-frame all-in-one digital camera. It now features a 61MP Full-Frame BSI CMOS sensor and the new BIONZ XR and AI Processing Unit. The sensor's surface features an Anti-Reflection coating, and Sony has omitted the optical low-pass filter to achieve superior image quality. It has no In-body image stabilization or OIS.

The camera is made of lightweight yet rigid magnesium alloy that Sony claims 'balances aesthetics and functionality.' The top plate is flat, while its grip design and surface texture are said to provide a secure and comfortable hold. It measures 113.3 x 67.9 x 87.5mm and weighs 498 grams with battery and recording media.

Integrated into the body is the ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F/2.0 lens with an optical design of 8 elements in 7 groups. It has a 49mm front filter thread. Even though it has a fixed lens, users can tap into the versatility of three prime lenses thanks to the camera's Step Crop Shooting Function, which allows them to switch between 35mm, 50mm, or 70mm equivalent focal lengths via assigned buttons or dials. When shooting in RAW, users can reselect the focal length during post-production.

At the back of the camera is the 2.36-million-dot XGA OLED with 0.7x magnification and 100 percent coverage. Below is the 3-inch 2.359-million-dot Fixed Touch screen LCD. On the top plate is Sony's Intelligent Hot Shoe.

The camera can capture 14-bit images and save them to either HEIF, JPEG, or RAW format. It records video up to 4K at 30fps, 4:2:2 10-bit video. It has a built-in stereo microphone. Files are saved to a single UHS-II SD card slot.

It has 693 densely arranged phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 78 (for still image shooting) of the image capture's area.

Ports on the camera include a microHDMI port, a 3.5mm TRS Stereo Microphone Input, and a USB-C port. It connects wirelessly through WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 4.2.

It is powered by the 1,020mAh NP-FW50 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery with a 300-shot rating.
