Collaborate with other people on ChatGPT

OpenAI is piloting ChatGPT group chats and collaboration tools in select markets, enabling users to plan events, brainstorm ideas, and make decisions in a shared AI-powered space. This feature marks a step toward social, multi-user experiences in ChatGPT—though skeptics might wonder if the bot will ever master group dynamics better than your average family thread.

Whether a user is organizing a group dinner or drafting an outline with coworkers, ChatGPT can now assist users. Group chats are separate from your private conversations in ChatGPT, and your personal ChatGPT memory is never shared with anyone in the group chat.

OpenAI claims that they taught ChatGPT new social behaviors for group chats. It should follow the flow of the conversation and decide when to respond and when to stay quiet based on the context. The company says that developers gave ChatGPT the ability to react to messages with emojis and reference profile photos.

How does ChatGPT group chat work?

1. Tap the People icon in any chat.
2. ChatGPT duplicates the conversation into a new group (original remains private).
3. Share the invite link with up to 20 people.
4. Set up a profile (name, username, photo) on first join.
5. Access via the new "Group Chats" sidebar section.

Much like your usual ChatGPT conversations, others can join in. Responses are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto. ChatGPT will respond based on its Free, Go, Plus, or Pro Plans. Search, image, and file upload, image generation, and dictation are enabled. Rate limits only apply when ChatGPT responds. (not to messages between users in the group chat)

Responses from ChatGPT count toward the limit available to the person ChatGPT is responding to. Users can mention 'ChatGPT' in a message to prompt a response. Users can manage the group settings, such as naming the group, adding or removing people, or mute notifications. Users can set custom instructions for how ChatGPT responds in each group chat. (whether to share more context or give a specific tone or personality)

Group chats are separate from your private conversations. Therefore, your personal ChatGPT memory is not used in group chats, and ChatGPT does not create new memories from these conversations. OpenAI says that they are exploring the possibility of offering granular controls in the future, so users can choose if they can allow ChatGPT to use memory with group chats.

OpenAI emphasizes that users are in control. They can accept an invitation to join a group chat. Each user can see who's in the chat or leave at any time. Group members can remove participants with the exception of the group creator. The group creator can only be removed by leaving themselves.

If someone under 18 uses group chats, ChatGPT automatically reduces exposure to sensitive content for everyone in the chat. Parents or guardians can turn group chats off entirely through parental controls.

Group chats are rolling out on mobile and on web for logged-in ChatGPT users on ChatGPT Free, Go, and Plus plans in select markets such as Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

OpenAI says that this pilot is a small first step toward shared experiences in ChatGPT, and they will expand based on feedback.

  1. The group chat feature sounds pretty convenient, especially when you’re working in a group. I’m just a little worried about the bot interrupting at the wrong time, but if it knows how to “shut up when needed” PolyTrack then it’s fine. I’ll have to try it out and see how effective it is.
