Two government agencies are also on board

Meta has announced changes in its Teen Account features to better protect Filipino youth on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.

The tech giant revealed the new features during the “Screen Smart” event in Makati.

According to a PhilStar report, the core of the update is a more restrictive version of the "Hidden Words" anti-bullying feature, which automatically filters comments and direct message requests for teen users.

Malina Enlund, head of Meta's safety policy in Asia-Pacific, said the company worked with relevant groups to ensure the lists are properly localized.

The upgraded features include default private accounts, messaging restrictions, limited interactions, time limit reminders, and enabled sleep mode.

Those aged 13 to 17 are automatically required to have parental permission to modify their account settings.

Meanwhile, parents can use the Family Center to supervise their child’s account. They can monitor account settings, view blocked contacts, and see a list of accounts their child interacts with.

The Council for the Welfare of Children is working with Meta to improve online child abuse reporting mechanisms.

The National Youth Commission has also partnered with Meta to launch "Meta camps" nationwide. This will train parents, teachers, and students on existing in-app safety tools while featuring a dedicated digital safety module for the youth sector.
