Samsung has introduced a new top-end mobile image sensor, the ISOCELL HPC, which the company says is the first in the industry to feature DeepPix technology enabling 16-bit RAW output.

The sensor is a 200MP unit built with a 1/1.3-inch optical format and 0.6μm pixels. Samsung states that DeepPix technology allows the sensor to capture more light than its predecessor by enabling each pixel to hold a greater amount of light before reaching overexposure.
According to the company, this results in brighter highlights, more defined shadow detail, and an overall wider dynamic range.

Samsung also says the ISOCELL HPC supports 16-bit HDR, which the company states contributes to cleaner images with reduced noise, especially in difficult lighting conditions.
Additionally, the company reports that the sensor is designed to maintain HDR image quality across several in-sensor zoom levels—1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x—which it says results in more consistent image quality at different zoom settings.
The sensor supports 4K video recording at up to 180 frames per second, intended to allow for smoother slow-motion footage. Samsung notes that the ISOCELL HPC also incorporates a new lens and light-guiding structure designed to direct more light to each pixel.
Samsung has not confirmed specific devices that will use the sensor, though it is expected to appear in smartphones released later this year.
