DICT, CICC lifts ban on Discord following major disruptions

Following backlash, DICT's CICC lifts the Discord ban in the Philippines after a compliance meeting with the platform's management.

No more ban on Discord

The Department of Information and Communications Technology's (DICT) Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) announced Thursday that the block on messaging and media-sharing platform Discord has been lifted.

"We're ordering the lifting," DICT Undersecretary Renato Paraiso, CICC executive director, confirmed through GMA News and DICT's live press conference on its official Facebook page.

The lifting followed a meeting between the CICC and Discord management to discuss the platform's compliance with regulatory requirements. Paraiso had earlier said the two parties were set to meet at noon to address the matter.

Discord access had been blocked on local networks after the CICC ordered the platform, along with Reddit, to set up local offices within 24 hours. 

Only Reddit was granted an extension after committing to child safety measures, leaving Discord inaccessible while it awaited a similar arrangement. The CICC had also cited concerns over extremist communities on the platform linked to the radicalization of minors in recent school shooting incidents.
