Google to enforce stricter app memory rules by 2027

Google Play is setting new rules to make apps faster and more reliable.

Apps that fail to comply risk losing visibility or publishing rights on the Play Store

In an announcement, the company said that all apps and games must meet strict limits on how much memory they use starting February 2027.

This includes controlling dynamic memory, managing bitmap images properly, and optimizing code with tools like R8.

To help developers prepare, Google has added new tools in the Play Console. These let teams track memory usage, spot "out of memory" crashes, and check how well their code is optimized. 

Moreover, developers will also get alerts if their apps cross the new limits, giving them time to fix issues before enforcement begins. More diagnostic features will roll out later in 2026.

Zero-Tap Sign-In

Another big change will come in April 2027. Apps that support sign‑in must adopt Zero‑Tap Sign‑In. 

Using the Android Restore Credentials API, this feature ensures users are automatically and securely logged in when they switch to a new device. Games are exempt for now, but Google plans to release special guidance for them in 2027.

Together, these updates aim to keep Android apps smooth, secure, and user‑friendly.
